ACT--Upcoming for All Juniors 3-20-18
- Don’t linger too long over a question that you struggle on. Make a note of it in your answer booklet and move on to a question you can answer. Come back to those questions that you struggled on at the end if you have any time left.
- The test is multiple choice! You might find the answer quickly by substituting the given answer choices to see which one is correct. This is known as backsolving. When using this as your strategy, start with the middle choice first.
- When you face those questions that deal with vague guidelines instead of just numbers, try picking numbers that fit the guidelines given. For example, if a < b is part of the question, pick any two numbers that work and substitute those into the answers. (a could be 2 & b could be 3)
- If your answer is decimal form and the answer choices are not, try converting the answer choices into decimals using your calculator. For fractions, divide the numerator (top) by the denominator (bottom). For radicals, type the answer directly into your calculator and compare. The one that matches your decimal answer will be the correct answer.
- Content Areas: physics, chemistry, biology, and earth/space sciences
Science consists of 7 passages in 35 minutes. This is an average of 5 minutes per passage.
Science passages are of 3 different types (NOT GIVEN IN THIS ORDER) and each one is 200-300 words long:
Data Representation (there will be 3)-text without headings, tables, graphs, charts and diagrams Do these 3 FIRST! These passages have 5 questions.
Research Summary (there will be 3)-text with headings, experiments relating to the Scientific Method. These passages are followed by 6 questions.
Conflicting Viewpoint (1 passage)- this is a passage with headings indicating 2 scientists or researchers who disagree on a topic. SAVE THIS ONE FOR LAST! This passage will have 7 questions to answer.
Methods for answering Data Representation Passages:
o Use diagrams
o Answer the question
o Don’t worry about technical jargon
o Ignore wordy details
o Just look for general trends in the charts or the table

Please enter the both the assigned date and the due date as the date we used for each iLearn day. Please remind students that we have to have a high percentage of participation in order for these days to be approved at the state level or they will have to be made up as well.
You can continue to enter scores for iLearn assignments if you receive any from students, even once the trimester is over.
