Important Communications Reminders for Austinville Parents
- At the beginning of each year, parents are given the Parent School Compact. These agreements are designed to remind the student, parent, teacher and principal of the responsibilities they share in the learning process. There are a few that have not been returned. Please sign this paper and return to the teacher.
- Weekly newsletters are sent home each week by all grades. These inform parents, contain spelling words, include homework assignments and remind students of upcoming field trips and activities.
- Planners are used by students in grades 2-5. These should be signed nightly by parents. They are helpful in keeping parents abreast of their child's daily progress and behavior.
- Students in Mrs. Archer's Pre-K have a folder which goes home each week.
- Kindergarten and first grade students have folders with behavior calendars and other parent information. These should also be signed nightly by parents.

October Music is FUN!
Our students have been working on singing games in music. "Chicken on a Fencepost" is an African American singing game from the 1800s. The children learned to sing high Sol La and low Sol La in the melody of the song and then played the game. The children become two fences trying to keep the foxes away from the chicken. The first fox to find the correct gates and get the chicken gets to play the fox again. The children learn the song while having fun moving in circles and keeping the foxes away.
Now, it's close to Halloween and we're learning which instruments can make spooky sounds (timbres). Our new singing game this week is "Pass the Eyeball." The little rats you see in the pictures show the children which station to go to next as they learn to play melodies on the instruments and make sound effects with the spooky instruments. The children in the circle pass the eyeball around while singing until the song ends. The child left holding the eyeball goes to play the first instrument. This activity gives them more singing experience while also learning to play melodies on the Orff instruments.
