Quarterfinals vs Andale:
The Cardinals sets the stage for victory in the state quarter-final game by establishing an early lead over Andale/Garden Plain. The Cardinals scored five runs in their half of the first inning after Andale took an early 0-2 lead in their half of the first. Eudora's bats remained hot when the Cardinals added five more runs in the third inning with senior Addison Woods and sophomore Lexi Born powering the inning with RBI's. Born hit a bases loaded triple to highlight the inning and extend Eudora’s lead. The Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a double by sophomore Sam Claire knocking in junior Macy Crooks to end the game early, with the 10-run lead, 12-2. Sam Claire was the winning pitcher for Eudora surrendering 2 runs, on three hits, and striking out seven in five innings. The Cardinals had 14 hits, with Claire, sophomore Maddy Arnold, Born, Reese Pattison, and Jaiden Burris all having multiple hits for Eudora.
Semi-Finals vs Wamego:
The Cardinals came up just a bit short against Wamego in the Semi-finals, losing 0-1, in a hard-fought battle. Both teams were strong in the pitcher's circle, but Wamego was just a little stronger at the plate in the victory over Eudora. Sophomore Sam Claire allowed just 2 hits in the game and struck out 2. Sophomore Lexi Born and Katie Courter led the Cardinals on the base paths with each having 2 stolen bases.
Consolation Game vs Clearwater:
In the third-place game, the Cardinals put it all back together and took home a 9-5 victory over Clearwater to claim 3rd place in the 4A State Tournament. The Cardinals led the whole game after a strong first inning scoring 4 runs when sophomore Jaiden Burris doubled to drive in the first run to begin the scoring. Eudora scored three more runs in the third inning and added two more runs in the sixth inning to pad their lead a bit, and somewhat put the game out of reach. The Cardinals had 11 hits in the game with sophomore Lexi Born, Sam Claire, and senior Addison Woods each having multiple hits in the game. Sam Claire was the winning pitcher For Eudora. The right-hander surrendered five runs on six hits and struck out six through seven innings.
Clearwater put up a mild threat in the seventh inning, but the Eudora defense turned a pretty double play to end the game. When the batter-runner hit a ground ball to junior shortstop Kenzie Yoder. Yoder got the runner going to first for out number two. The runner on second then attempted to advance to third base on that play and a perfect throw from junior Lilly Rife to sophomore Jaiden Burris at third tagged the runner out, ending the game. Pretty nifty!
The Victory earned a 3rd place finish and trophy for the Cardinals in the 2023 season, along with the second year in a row ending the season with a win.
Great season overall, the Cardinals finish the year with a 17-6 record and 3rd in the state at the 4A level.
