Edgewood's Tiger Talk
September 13, 2019
We are committed to our journey of developing EACH child to be an inspired learner and a caring, contributing citizen.
School Policies
This week, I spoke with every class 5K-5th grade about school rules and policies. Here are a few highlights and questions to ask your children:
Phones and Tablets: Students are allowed to have them on the bus, but they must be turned off (not just put in vibrate and silent) and out of sight (in backpacks) during the entire school day. On the bus, students may only be on school-appropriate things; they may NOT take pictures/videos/audio recordings. To maintain student safety, an Edgewood rule is that if kids are listening/watching something on the bus, they must use headphones/earbuds. Also, students are personally and solely responsible for their devices; the school and other students will not be held financially responsible for damage/loss of personal phones/tablets. When possible, we encourage students to leave phones/tablets at home.
Bullying is not tolerated. Bullying can be gestures/words/actions, and is repeated. As responsible, confident thinkers, we encourage students to speak up if they feel bullied or they suspect bullying by telling a teacher.
We encourage students to use their words, not their fists/feet. I modeled what a "strong voice" sounds like when confronting something you don't like (e.g. a push that is too hard in soccer or tag).
Attendance matters. Being 15 minutes late each day adds up to 10 days lost over the course of a school year. School is important; I shared with students that they're responsible for helping you out by getting up and getting here on time.
Here are a few questions to ask your child:
1) Why is it important to sit "seat to seat and back to back" on the bus?
2) Are you "invisible" on the internet? (Grades 3-5)
3) Why are rules important?
If you'd like to review the entire Student Handbook, I encourage you to do so. Here is a link.
