Class Projects and Activities

Engineering

This project tasked Mr. Beaty's students with designing a device that could hold an egg and keep it from cracking upon impact after being dropped from 22 feet. The student whose device was the lightest, fewest number of material, and most accurate on the drop target earned the best score. The winner of the local competition earned the opportunity to go to UTK Engineers day and compete in the egg drop competition.

Biology

Mrs. Latshaw's Honors Biology I classes have worked on a project for the last couple of weeks. They have been studying macromolecules and how they are used in the body. The Research Question presented to students was

"How can we as scientists research, design, and create a nutritious bar to assist in addressing world hunger?"

Students were required to research a specific area of the globe and find:

  1. statistics for that specific area on poverty and food distribution
  2. local native foods grown or imported for that area
  3. health statistics related to disease, mortality, specific affected populations

In a bar form, students were required to

  1. create a recipe that contained the necessary FDA requirements for a single meal
  2. provide a realistic, approximate cost per bar
  3. create packaging for their bar
  4. provide a nutrition label
  5. present the final product

Chemistry

Chemistry students conducted the Flame Test Lab to determine the identity of unknown metals in chemical compounds based on the characteristic color that appears when heated. This lab supported student learning in the areas of atomic structure, electron configurations, energy levels, ground state, and excited state.
