News from our DinoMite Pre-K Classroom!
Ms. Harriger & Ms. Pope
February for Pre-K has been all about the love. Pre-K has worked hard at showing kindness and caring towards others. We have focused on using kind language and using teamwork. Every center in our class has had a teambuilding theme. The students were placed in groups of three and four. They were giving challenges such as drawing pictures together, building buildings that looked like something they have seen, work together counting and sorting items. We also have learning about Black History month. We have read stories and watch videos on famous African Americans. We have also listened to Motown songs. Students picked out their favorite Motown song. We created a special door based on their choices.

Our Dino-Mite kindergarten students have been really busy. They have learned so much in such as short month. We continued learning about Black History Month and attended a Black History Program. We learned about Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, and Presidents’ Day. We showed some “love” to our bus drivers, because we appreciate them so much. With February being Dental Health Month, we learned about the importance of brushing our teeth.
We have been working really hard with our reading and comprehension skills. In math we are working on addition, subtraction, and measurement.
Ms. Branch & Ms. Murray
It's been a busy February in room 105. At the beginning of the month we learned about the groundhog and made our perdictions. With February being black history month we discussed famous black Americans and what they did for our country. Next we also learn about dental health. During that time we learned how to take care of our teeth and things that were healthy snacks and things that were not so healthy. All of our students received a free tooth brush from the Bright Smiles program. We enjoyed learning about Valentine's Day and giving each of our friends a card and candy. Lastly we learned about President's day and the presidents that are remembered on this day. We were excited when Mrs. Branch showed us a dollar bill with George Washington on it and the five dollar bill with Abraham Lincoln's picture. We have been busy building word families to help us write sentences. In math we have been working on addition and subtraction. Our favorite volunteer Mr. Josh helped us so much this month, we are all so excited when he comes to our classroom. Until next time……
Ms. Strickland & Ms. Harding
February was a busy month in Mrs. Strickland and Mrs. Harding’s kindergarten class. We continued to work on addition and more and less in Math. We started working on our word families such as –at, -am, -an, -ap. We have been having fun with rhymes and sounding out our cvc words. We learned about black history, dental health, Valentine’s Day, Presidents Day and Groundhog’s day. We are looking forward to an exciting month of March and learning all about Dr. Seuss.
Ms. Gibson & Ms. Sampson
Mrs. Gibson and Ms. Sampson’s kindergarten class enjoyed learning in February!
Ms. Sampson taught a “sweet” math lesson. There is nothing like learning with candy!
The children used their sorting and counting skills to gather data and create their own candy heart graph. Finally, at the end of the lesson they were able to eat the candy. Thank You, Ms. Sampson for the fantastic lesson. We made Valentine pockets and learned how to write love notes. We also learned the best way to love our teeth is to brush… brush…brush!

This month, we learned how to use Power Pens to solve addition and subtraction problems. The students have to solve the problem on their card to find the answer. Then, they use their Power Pens to press on the answer. If the pen lights up red, they need to work on the problem again. If it lights up green, they answered the question correct. They enjoy these so much!
Ms. Perdue & Ms. Locklear
This month in our class we have been working on reading skills such as making connections with the texts that we read. One of our stories for the month of February was Abe Lincoln’s Hat by Martha Brenner. In the story, Abe Lincoln kept important papers in his tall hat so that he wouldn’t forget them. Students made their connections by thinking and writing about something that is important to them that they would keep in their hat if they could. Some examples included: family, dog, favorite toy, snacks, etc.
Ms. Strickland
February was a busy month in our class! We learned about past presidents, dental health and black history. Students had the best time watching the birds in the library and learning new things about different types of birds. We turned what we learned into an illustrated writing and we also used the birds as a project using shapes and graphs in math. We used one of our presidents in a math lesson to measure and students each got to measure up to our past president, Abraham Lincoln. There were so many exciting activities for students this month.

Ms. Rogers
It’s great when we can learn and snack at the same time in Ms. Rogers’s room. On February 14th, my class did a fraction activity using Conversation Hearts. The students had start learning fractions. Therefore, they were able to put to practice what they had learned. The activity included them counting the total number of hearts to get their denominator. They grouped them into colors to get the numerator. They put the hearts in order from least to greatest. They then had to graph the hearts by colors and complete some word problems. After completing the activity, they were able to indulge by eating their hearts. The students enjoyed and LOVED the activity.

Students have been working hard taking reading passage quizzes and math quizzes online, to prepare for the EOG. During ELA, we have been working on text features. The students created a text feature visual to go along with their library book. Their visual displays items such as Table of Contents, Charts, Maps, Photograph, Bold Words, Glossary and Index. Students were able to identify these features in each book. Stop by and view them in the third grade hallway. They have been reading the chapter book Stone Fox. It is set in the winter season and the main character is a very persistent young boy. We are enjoying this thrilling book. Students read independently, in small groups and as a whole class. As we read, they are completing comprehension questions and studying the characters in depth. This month students really enjoyed the visit from Birds of Prey in the library.
Ms. Phillips
February has been a very busy month for our class. We learned and completed activities on Groundhog Day and President’s Day. We had a Valentine’s Party and exchanged Valentine cards with classmates. The students enjoyed learning about many different famous African Americans. The students had to choose an African American of their choice and complete a research project with a partner and share it with the class. To end the month, the students were learning about text features. The students had to pick a Nonfiction book and complete a File Folder Project with a partner. The students had fun making these and they turned out great!!
