Alpha Aur (Capella)

By:Rishabh Ruikar

Since Capella is a binary star, I will be focusing on the first, primary star, Capella-A. Its luminosity is 79 times that of the sun and its temperature is 4900 K.

Luminosity is the total amount of energy emitted by a star in terms of brightness.

Interesting Facts

  • Capella is the sixth brightest star in the night sky.
  • It is 80 times more luminous than the sun.
  • In the next few million years, Capella will swell to become red giants and become hundreds of times their original size.

Apparent and Absolute Magnitude and distance away from Earth

The apparent magnitude of Capella is .08 and the absolute magnitude is .4

The apparent magnitude is the measure of a brightness of a star as seen on Earth by the naked eye.

Th absolute magnitude is the measure of the exact brightness of the star compared to many other stars in the universe.( In this case, we are comparing it to the Sun.)

Capella is about 45 light years away from the earth.

A light year is the term of measurement in space because scientists figured that a mile would be too small to measure anything in outer space. A lightyear basically means how far light can travel in a year. A light year is worth approx. 6 trillion(6,000,000,000,000) miles.

Size to Sun and Earth and Spectral Classification

Capella is about 10 times our Sun's diameter and around 1000 times the diameter of the Earth.

Capella's spectral classification is A.
