What's Happening at School?
Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire November Edition
Next Generation Science at GT/RA
There are three dimensions to learning science. Cross-cutting concepts, science and engineering practices, and disciplinary core ideas are combined to help students build a cohesive understanding of science over time. The implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards have created some engaging lessons that allow students to explore and explain science phenomena. This edition of What's Happening at School shares what is happening in our science classrooms.
The Effect of Exercise
GT/RA students in Mrs. Jeffrey's 4th Period Biology students performing a self-designed lab experiment to determine the effect of exercise on homeostasis.
How much water is in popcorn?
3rd Period Chemistry students at GT/RA are performing an experiment to determine the percentage of water in unpopped popcorn.
Mr. Hough's GT 3rd Grade Science
Mr. Hough's 3rd grade class created a model of soil and rocks to protect a home from flooding. Students then observed what happened to their model when Mr. Hough poured water on their model. Was the home protected? What erosion happened? What was destroyed by water?
Biodiversity
The Ruthven-Ayrshire 8th grade explore biodiversity with Mrs. Beisell. If apples all taste like apples, why do they have different colored skin?
Ruthven-Ayrshire 2nd Grade Learn How Spiders Travel
In this Mystery Science activity, Mrs.Peton's students built a spider that can climb up a string. Students examined the similarities and differences between three different types of spiders. They attached their spider to a piece of yarn and worked with a partner to make their spider climb up its string!
GT 4th Grade STEM Project
Mrs. Klepper's class built ramps to measure how far a hot wheel car will travel. Students worked with a team to decide on materials and construction of their ramp.
Family and Consumer Science
GT/RA high school students compare and contrast types of cheese in cooking class. Is the cheese hard or soft? What type of flavor? Does it have an aroma? Students also researched how long the cheese would age and where it is primarily produced.

Teachers learned from Prairie Lakes AEA staff and their peers on a variety of topics. The learning included student trauma, parental participation, note - taking, writing literacy, science, and social studies lessons, APL classroom management, safe searching on the internet, and questioning strategies.
Ruthven-Ayrshire Elementary Glow Party
The RA elementary students enjoyed a Glow Party for their PBIS celebration. Students enjoyed games, glow paint, and prizes as they remember to be respectful to self, others, and property.
