In the coming weeks, I will be coming around to all schools to hold optional meetings with staff. In the past 2 years, I haven't been able to get out and connect with you as much as I would prefer. The purpose of these meetings are to hear from you about your experience, how things are going, and how I can support you.

These meetings are completely optional; you can sign up for an individual time slot, or bring a small group. I also know that there are not enough slots to meet with everyone. I will schedule more of these in the future.

Flow Chart

Skagit County recently published an updated flow chart for COVID screening and quarantine guidelines. This is in line with state DOH updated guidelines. A new flow chart for a symptomatic person at school is posted here.


The definition of fully vaccinated has not changed and does not include the booster shot. Everyone is still considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose in a two-shot series, such as the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines, or two weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as the J&J/Janssen vaccine. Fully vaccinated, however is not the same as optimally protected. To be optimally protected, a person needs to get a booster shot when and if eligible.

  • A booster is not currently a requirement of employment.

  • While there is no official change in the definition, having a booster does affect the decision to quarantine for those who are 18 years and older.

  • "Booster when eligible" = 6 months after completing Moderna series, 5 months after completing Pfizer series, 2 months after J & J.

Test-to-Stay for Staff

We are expanding our Test to Stay program for all staff. The Test to Stay program is located at Anacortes High School.

Test-to-Stay is available to staff who:

  • Are not fully vaccinated and/or not boosted (see above)

  • Are notified while at work that they are a close contact

  • Have been symptomatic, but symptoms are improving or resolved and need a test to return to work (see flow chart above)

Tests are administered Monday-Friday, 8:15 - 9:30 a.m. You do not need to make an appointment; just show up and line up outside along the west side of the main AHS building. Staff who receive a negative test can remain at work. Do not enter the high school.

Elementary Building Scheduling Committee 2021-2022 school year

Teaching and Learning will be hosting an Elementary Building Scheduling Committee in March with around 20 internal stakeholders representing a wide variety of staff at the elementary level. This committee will review and make recommendations for redesigning the elementary schedule to incorporate essential priorities and legal requirements. The committee's goal is to make recommendations for an elementary schedule that includes critical priorities and legal requirements that are cost neutral with initial implementation in the fall of 2022.

We are hosting this committee because the current schedule was designed based on different priorities, district programs, and old State requirements. We need to review the current schedule and determine how to adjust, modify, or redesign the schedule to respond to these differences. It is essential to bring critical internal stakeholders together to review and provide input and feedback on the schedule redesign and proposed recommendations.

An email will be sent to all Elementary staff with an interest form to submit if you want to be considered for membership on the committee.

Feb Election - Please remember to vote by Tuesday, Feb 8!

The Anacortes School Board approved two resolutions on November 18, 2021, placing two ballot measures before voters for the February 8, 2022 election. Both measures are replacement levies, taking the place of expiring levies approved by voters in 2018. The combined, estimated rate of $1.28 per $1,000 valuation is 32 cents lower than previously approved rates in 2018.

Budget Code Updates

The Finance Department has updated the majority of account codes. Work continues this month, including:

  • Create automated budget reports for each person that has budget responsibilities (administrators).
  • Meet with administrators and support staff regarding their budget codes
  • Define the meaning of the codes.
  • Develop an understanding of new budget reports.

There may be account code combinations that you need that are currently not available either because they do not exist or that they are not active accounts. If a new account code is needed, contact Mike Sullivan, 360-503-1213 or

Joan Larkin, Accounts Payable, is Retiring

After 25 years dedicated to the District, Joan Larkin is retiring on March 31, 2022. Joan spent most of those years at the Anacortes High School in the ASB/Counseling office and the last five years at the District Office. Please take some time over the next couple months to thank Joan for her tremendous service to the district.

The position has been posted for her replacement, if you want to pass along.

It is no small job to enter a different classroom each day, jump into different lesson plans, and work with new students, but our substitutes do every day, and the District thanks you!
