Hawk Squawk January 2020
A Newsletter from Hiteon's Parent Teacher Club (PTC)
Presidents' Message
Dear Hiteon Families,
Happy New Year! We hope you had a great break and came back refreshed and ready to start a new decade! Hiteon PTC kicked off the new year with our January PTC Board and General meetings. Here are a few highlights from those meetings:
Beaverton Friends of Music representative and former Hiteon parent, Erica Ediger, came to the January PTC Board meeting to introduce the Beaverton Friends of Music program. Beaverton Friends of Music is a coalition of parents, students, teachers, alumni, and concerned citizens working to restore and promote excellence in our K-12 music programs in the Beaverton School District. Ms. Ediger wants Hiteon parents to know about the program, and is seeking input and help in advocating for equitable music programs across the district. Find out more at www.musiceducationmatters.org.
Middle School Boundary Adjustment was discussed in detail at our general meeting. There are some changes being planned that could impact Hiteon families. Please read below on why Hiteon family involvement in the boundary adjustment planning is important.
Fun Run is happening May 1st. It is the largest fundraiser of the school year, typically raising over $50,000 for the PTC to enhance our children’s experience at Hiteon. Please consider joining the Fun Run planning committee, details below.
Hiteon Family Movie Night will be January 24th in the Hiteon gym! A big thank you to Cub Scout Pack 872 for collaborating with the PTC on this event. The winner of our movie poll was Lego Movie 2. Please read below for some notes on how to make this a safe and fun evening for all.
Please join us for our next PTC general meeting on February 5th at 7:00PM. In addition to our general meeting discussion, we will have a representative from the Beaverton Education Foundation discussing how they partner with parents and teachers to help fund innovative projects and student enrichment. We hope to see you there!
Warm wishes,
Kim Rivers, PTC President

Hiteon Family Movie Night
Friday, January 24, 6-8PM
Movie Night is coming soon! We look forward to having you join us for this family experience in the Hiteon gym.
Movie Night is a family event. Please make sure all children in attendance have an adult present to supervise. We ask families to keep their children with them at all times and seated during the movie. For the convenience of all we will be taking a brief intermission this year mid-way through the movie. This will be a great time to get extra concessions and use the restroom. Thank you for helping us make this event great!”
Lost & Found
All this winter weather means the Hiteon Lost and Found has lots of missing hats, scarves, gloves and coats! Lunchboxes and water bottles can often be found there too. Please take a moment to look through the piles so everyone is ready to take advantage of any snow we might get!
Please know that every effort is made to return items to students who have lost them. Items labeled with the student’s last name can easily be returned! The next time the Lost and Found will be cleaned out is Thursday, January 30th. All unclaimed items will be donated to the Beaverton School District Clothes Closet.
Donuts with Dudes
Thursday, February 6, 7:30-8:00 AM
Come to the Hiteon gym early on Thursday morning and enjoy a light breakfast with your "Dude" or "Dudette"!
We will be serving donut holes and muffins, along with fruit and a drink, before school begins.
This is a great way to spend time with your child before they head off to class and also meet others in the Hiteon community.
Please note the parking lot get full fast but there will be overflow parking at the SW Hills Baptist Church across the street from Hiteon Park.
Hope to see you there!

Hiteon Science Expo
Thursday, March 12, 2020 6:00pm – 8:00pm
That’s right! It’s time to let those scientific minds fly and design an experiment reflecting your curiosity and interests. You can do an experiment, create an invention, or reverse engineer an existing product – your choice!
4th and 5th graders
- Classroom presentations are complete and entry forms have been sent home.
- Entry forms are due Feb 14, but I encourage 4th and 5th graders to turn them in much sooner.
- Project board distribution will start Monday Jan 20th for those that have turned in an entry form.
- Students who are in the musical are strongly encouraged to start early on their science project!
K – 3rd graders
- Classroom presentations will be on Jan 30 and 31, immediately after the science assembly. Entry forms will be distributed at that time.
- Entries are due by Friday Feb 14.
- Project boards will go out starting on Monday Feb 17.
Here are a few guidelines for participating:
1. Pick a project idea and sign up, either individually or with Hiteon friends/siblings - up to four students may work together. Only one entry form is needed per project. The parent signing the form must ensure that all parents are aware and in agreement. (Students should only officially participate in 1 project registered for the Expo).
2. You may work with your family to do your project, but remember it should be your work and your words explaining it.
3. Make sure to follow the safety guidelines!
4. On the Science Expo night, doors open at 6:00 pm and project reviewing begins at 6:30, starting with projects done by kindergarteners and progressing by grade through fifth graders. Once your project is reviewed you can pick up your participation prize! This is not a competition, so relax, have fun, and enjoy!
5. Additional tips for parents and students, including online resources for project ideas can be found on the Hiteon PTC Website at: http://hiteonptc.org/our-enrichment-programs/science-fair/
6. Please contact karlmeyer@comcast.net with any questions.
Hiteon 5th Grade Families- Yearbook pictures needed
Each year our graduating 5th graders are given a yearbook to celebrate their graduation to middle school. We need your help to complete this!
We need pictures that you have gathered over the years to add to the yearbook. This would include pictures taken at class parties, school dances, bingo night, fun run etc. Send anything you have that is school related (not personal family pictures). Depending on how many pictures we receive, not every picture may make the final print, but we will do our best to include what we receive. We also need baby pictures, we will include one baby picture per child. Please start sending the pictures to Hiteonclassof2020@gmail.com
We need all pictures submitted by March 1st.
Thank you!

Recruiting a Few Good Leaders
It’s that time of year, when the PTC Board members begin thinking about recruiting for next year’s replacements and additions to the Board. We have a few open positions for the 2020-2021 school year, including:
Secretary- The primary duties of the secretary are to attend and record minutes at all board and general meetings. You will need to complete the minutes and electronically share them with the board members and the general attendees from the sign in sheet. This allows for any revisions/clarifications to be made. Final minutes are approved by the Board and a copy is posted on the PTC website for easy access for parents, staff and community members. The Secretary also oversees Hiteon PTC communications, including the monthly Hawk Squawk newsletter, PTC Facebook page, and website, which all are coordinated by the PTC Communications Chairperson. The secretary also performs any duties that the President or Treasurer request. For more information please contact Secretary@hiteonptc.org
Volunteer Coordinator(this is currently a co-held position, recruiting 1 new person) The main duty of the volunteer coordinator is to make sure that all activities have adequate staffing, and to assist at those events when needed. You will work with the Board and Committee chairs to send out volunteer solicitations as well as to keep the My Volunteer Page (MVP) system up and running with current information. This can include adding new activities/events, posting announcements, running reports on volunteer hours, approving new volunteers into the system, etc. The MVP system keeps information from year to year so no need to start from scratch every year – it’s just a matter of editing. For more information please contact Volcoord@hiteonptc.org
Co-President (to serve alongside current President, Kim Rivers) The PTC president oversees the PTC executive board and serves as a liaison to the Hiteon staff. Through monthly meetings with the Principal and Vice-Principal, the president collaborates with Hiteon administrative staff to address the needs of the Hiteon community. The PTC president also schedules and runs board and general PTC meetings and supports the executive board members in their roles. For more information please contact President@hiteonptc.org
Co-Vice President 1, Fundraising (to serve alongside current VP1, Danielle Kolp) This position works in conjunction with several committees and would oversee all fundraising activities at Hiteon...for example Fun Run, Popcorn, Dining 4 Dollars & Book Fair. Each of these committees has its own chairperson(s), and additional volunteers to help raise these funds. It is a great way to get involved! For more information please contact VP1fundraising@hiteonptc.org
Serving as a Board member gives you a closer view of the ins and outs of your child’s school, develops leadership skills, and can help build your community at Hiteon. We would like to have these positions filled by March 2020, so new members can begin “shadowing” current board members as needed. Get in touch with any board member, or email president@hiteonptc.org to learn more about any of these open positions.
Middle School Boundary Adjustment Committee Seeks Hiteon/South Beaverton Input
Steve Sparks, Executive Administrator for Long-Range Planning, attended the January PTC meeting to tell us more about the middle school boundary adjustment happening in the district, and why it should matter to you.
Up in the North end of the district, a new middle school has been built which will help relieve extreme crowding at Stoller Middle School, but the boundary adjustment will have cascading effects across the whole district. For Hiteon, that could mean everything stays the same, that all Hiteon students continue going to Conestoga Middle School. Or it could mean that Hiteon could move to sending half of its students to Conestoga and half to Highland Middle School, or some other scenario.
The Middle School Boundary Adjustment Committee would like to hear your feedback. Please attend upcoming committee meetings, and/or submit your feedback on the BSD webpage. Search for Middle School Boundary Adjustment, and leave a comment about what you would like to see happen for Hiteon students.
