Symphonic Band Update
Middle school night is THIS FRIDAY!
Maintenance Mondays
We will start doing a check on Mondays for all supplies. Your students will receive a grade for the following:
ALL students need:
- Instrument in great working condition (All keys, valves, slides move with no issues)
- Organized band binder with 2 pencils and a highlighter
- Tuner and clip (Info below)
Reed players need:
- A reed case for all of their reeds (This was in the beginner supplies for all students here)
- 8 Reeds (Soprano Clarinet and Alto/Tenor Saxophone players) in great condition
- 5 Reeds (Bass Clarinet and Bari Saxophone players) in great condition
- 3 Reeds (Oboe and Bassoon players) in great condition
Clarinets should be playing D'Addario Reserve Classic reeds (Ask them what strength they play)
Bass Clarinets should be playing D'Addario Reserve reeds strength 3
Saxophones should be on blue box Vandoren reeds, strength 3.
Brass players need:
- Valve Oil
- Slide grease
Trombones will be subject to a slide check! We will double check to make sure it moves quietly and without catching anywhere.
Tuners and clips
We will not take a grade on this next week (10/21) but we will on the following Monday (10/28)
Your students will need a tuner and clip for their instruments. If your student was in our beginner band and you purchased the full supply kit, they already have a clip that plugs into their phone (Peterson Pitchgrabber).
The PDF below explains the details and has pictures of what your students will need We will be using these daily starting right after the Fall Concert.
Your students will need both the tuner (or app) AND the clip for their phone/tuner. The clip helps to isolate their sound from everybody else's so they can tune just themselves while the full band is playing.
Please note, if your student's phone does not have a headphone jack, they will also need their dongle to use this app on their phone.
The clips that go into the tuner and the clips that go into a student's phone are NOT interchangeable!
I recommend you purchase the Korg TM-60 tuner and the Peterson TP3 clip that plugs into it rather than using the phone app. We always have spare AAA batteries for those so we don't have to worry about them dying during class or being a distraction like phones tend to be.
Please let me know if you have any questions. We will start using these immediately after the fall concert!
Playing Assignments
Students will have two playing assignments a week, one in class and one in sectionals. Regular, deliberate practice will help your student be successful. Please help them schedule practice time and help hold them accountable!
Recording assignment due!
Your students have a recording assignment due once per week on Google classroom.
Please ask them if they've submitted it!
Sectionals
Changes for this week:
NO SAXOPHONE SECTIONAL
NO DOUBLE REED SECTIONAL
Saxophones and double reeds will do their sectional playing test on Tuesday in class.
The co-curricular sectional schedule is below. If your student has a morning sectional, the athletics hallway door closes automatically at 7:15 AM, so students need to be in the building before then!
