Atticus
By Nathan Yun
Symbol
"This case, Tom Robinson's case, is something that goes to the essence of a man's conscience. Scout, I couldn't go to church and worship God if I didn't try to help that man" (Lee 139).
This quote tells us that Atticus would defend anybody, even if they're African American, because he wants to treat everyone equally.
Character Traits
"Would you write your name for us?..... You're left handed, Mr. Ewel" (Lee 237)
I think that this quote tells us that Mr. Ewel was a possibility of beating Mayella because she was bruised on the right side of her face. Also this ruled out Tom Robinson as a suspect because he was unable to use his left hand due to an injury when he was younger.
Color
" I wanted to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand" (Lee 116).
This quote shows that Atticus cares for his children and teaches them an important lesson about courage.
Connection
"If her right eye was blackened and she was beaten mostly on the right side of the face, it would tend to show that a left handed person did it" (Lee 238).
This quote tells us that Atticus suspects Mr. Ewel of beating his child and that Atticus is defending Tom Robinson.
