Volume 2, Issue 28 - March 3, 2019
In the last few days there has been a lot of talk about the MoMo Challenge. If you are not familiar with this character, MoMo is said to be a creepy character who is the face of a viral Internet challenge that requires players to complete escalating tasks that are usually dangerous and involve self-harm. I want to take this opportunity to clarify that although some media have reported this challenge that was initiated years ago is coming around again, the reality is that the idea is what is circulating again, NOT he actual challenge.
Please, understand that this is a hoax. This has been confirmed by public statements from YouTube, Google, and fact checker Snopes.
If you are still concerned, I recommend you read these Forbes articles (LINK 1, LINK 2) about what you need to know as a parent.
To summarize, what is most likely happening is that kids are telling other kids about it, but in reality no one has actually seen or interacted with these videos of MoMo. Most people discuss the images they have seen in the news or social media, not the actual challenge.
As a parent, you may want to use this opportunity to discuss with your students appropriate use of social media, urban legend/hoax, and above all, that is never wrong to tell an adult when you are concerned about something!

Media Center Minute
Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. This year’s theme is “Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers”. The Gentry Media Center has been celebrating diversity with a different theme all year. Our March theme is focused on Women’s History and we have a variety of books featured in the media center for students to check out. In addition to the school day, the Gentry Media Center is open each day before and after school for students to check out books. We have a wide variety of books to meet the academic and leisure reading needs for all students. We strive for students to have a love for reading in order to be life-long learners. We also have online reading applications for iPads including Overdrive, Flipster, and Destiny Discover so students can read on their iPads. Columbia is blessed with a great public library where families can go together to participate and celebrate reading as well.

If you want to be part of the audience for this “Practically Perfect” show, tickets are sold at the door for only $5.00 each. Each evening the show will begin at 7:00 pm and lasts about an hour. 1, 2, 3, 4... StuCo Declares a Penny War!
During the week of March 4-8th, Student Council (StuCo) will be sponsoring a Penny War to raise money for City of Refuge. This organization helps equip refugees and immigrants in Columbia with the materials that they will need in order to help them successfully assimilate into our community. During this fundraiser, students will be filling four buckets with either pennies, silver coins, or dollar bills. Each bucket is representative of a team of our very own GMS faculty members. In the end, the group of faculty member whose bucket contains the most pennies (or is filled with the highest monetary value) will step up to take a pie in the face for a good cause. The actual pieing will take place in the gym before the school day begins on Thursday, March 14th (Pie Day). StuCo is excited about their first ever Penny War and welcomes all of the support that they can get to help out this great organization!
