The Will to Lead
Part III: The Skill to Teach
Responsive Academic Literacy
"The next instructional area we have identified is responsive academic literacy: using text, fiction, and non fiction to validate and affirm culture and language. Strong literacy skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening are critical for student success in most content areas. Students who are strong readers and writers tend to be strong in other subjects, such as math, science, and social studies (August & Shanahan, 2006). In this instructional area, to become responsive, we recommend that practitioners artfully and skillfully use read-alouds as a form of storytelling to better engage students (Trelease, 2001). We also promote using strategic supplemental text selections in addition to the core text on a regular basis. Finally, we encourage the use of engaging literacy strategies, many of which are connected to oral and written language development and beneficial to struggling readers and writers alike."
