Reading! Technology! Fun!

April 2014

April is a big month in the NPES Learning Commons! It is National Poetry Month and School Library Month! To celebrate, we will be hosting Maker Moments in the Learning Commons; Mrs. Byrd Fort and Mrs. Swygert will be popping into classrooms for Poetry Breaks (all month long); we will be encouraging teachers, students, and parents to send in their #shelfies; we will be participating in Poem in Your Pocket Day on April 24; and NPES will be participating in Meet @ Main at the Lexington County Public Library on April 24 at 6pm. We hope that you will join us in the fun!

MakerSpace Moments

Have you been to Edventure lately? If so, maybe you’ve seen their MakerSpace…an awesome space for kids to create. MakerSpaces are showing up in more and more schools and we are getting in on the action with MakerSpace Moments. Each teacher will be getting 3 passes. You may use these passes to send up to 3 students to the Learning Commons during MakerSpace Moments times. We will be hosting Makerspace Moments on the following days/times throughout the month of April (starting April 1):

Tuesdays 9am – 10am

Wednesdays 10:15am – 11:15am

Fridays 1:45pm – 2:15pm

If you want to read more about the Maker movement, you can visit this link: http://makerspace.com/

Poetry Breaks

All month long, Mrs. Byrd Fort and Mrs. Swygert will be popping in to classrooms for POETRY BREAKS. We will knock on your door and come in to read a quick poem. Afterwards, we will leave! You never know when we will show up…

#shelfies

We all know how to take a #selfie…add your favorite bookshelf behind you and make it a #shelfie! We would love for teachers, parents, and students to take pictures of themselves and share them with us. You can share via social media by making sure to tag the Learning Commons on Twitter (@mrsbyrdfort), Facebook (New Providence Elementary School Learning Commons), or Instagram (@npeslearningcommons) – be sure to also include the hashtag #shelfie You can also just email them to me. They will be added to the scrolling photos in the Learning Commons.

Poem in Your Pocket Day

On April 24, keep a poem in your pocket and share it! http://www.poets.org/page.php/prmID/406

Meet @ Main

Join GMS, NPES, CSES, PHES, MES, MGES, RBES, and WKES for Meet @ Main at the Lexington County Public Library on Thursday, April 24 at 6pm. The public librarians will share information about summer reading and there will be a special performance by Porkchop Productions!

Mrs. Swygert's Spot!

My last day is April 8th. I can't believe my internship is almost over. I have had a great time here at NPES this semester! Thanks to Mrs. Byrd Fort, Mrs. Gobbi, and Ms. Burkett for letting me join their awesome team and learn from them. I also want to thank all of the teachers and students that I had the chance to work with. I appreciate everything and will take these ideas with me to my own library in the fall. I will come back and visit sometime soon!

Life Long Guidelines & Life Skills SPOTLIGHT!

Don't forget to add resources (books, websites, videos) that you use to help you teach the Life Skills and LifeLong Guidelines for the week/month. You can add these resources to this Google Doc (or send them to me and I'll add them): https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NFsEIehMDFzjrxnwBPpJsen3KBnIgTe4EHJwA2nJLC8/edit?usp=sharing

This month, we focus on Integrity, Patience, and Problem Solving. Let us know if we can help you find resources!
