Every scholar, every day! February 2023
A Message from Leslie Thomas
Hello Diamondbacks!
This month our 3rd-5th graders will be taking our spring interim test. Testing will begin the week of February 6th. Please help by sending your child everyday to school so they will be prepared. Thank you for making every day count!
We will be having a school dance on February 14th. We will not be accepting any deliveries on that day.
This past month we practiced our mandated lock down drill. Drills are a critical component to school safety. Each month we practice various drills as well as a fire drill. As parents, you also play a special role in our Standard Response Protocols.
What responsibilities do you, as parents, have regarding the SRP?
· Be familiar with the terminology in case a directive is activated while you are on campus.
· Follow the directives until the “All Clear” is given.
· Review the actions for each of the five responses with your child. Stress the importance of active listening during instructions and following any SRP directives given without hesitation.
· Be flexible and understanding when attempting to remove your child from school during the activation of SRP directives. There may be times when removing your child from class or school is not allowed for safety reasons.
· Be patient with communication. During a situation involving a possible threat or hazard, school personnel must remain focused on the safety and well-being of all students. Please minimize unnecessary contact with your child or the school staff, as there is a possibility that incoming calls or texts could jeopardize their safety. District personnel will provide information on the situation, as well as access to your child as soon as possible. Ensure that your contact information is up to date with valid cell phone numbers and email addresses.
Please make sure to check our campus web page frequently at sisd.net/cactustrailses as important information is posted there. You can also follow me on Twitter to keep updated and informed about school openings and schedules. Thank you for trusting us with your child and I wish you all a CACTASTIC February!
Respectfully,
Leslie Thomas

💘 SEL Social and Emotional Learning 💘
What is SEL
Social-emotional learning is a process whereby children and adults develop and successfully apply the skills and knowledge to understand and control emotions, show empathy to others, develop healthy relationships, set positive and realistic goals, and make sound decisions. These skills may include self-control, self-awareness, emotional management, responsible decision making, and relationship skills.
Social emotional learning competencies are:
Self- awareness: The ability to identify one’s thoughts, emotions, influences on their behavior, as well as the ability to analyze their own strengths and weaknesses.
Self-management: The ability to control one’s thoughts, emotions, and behavior in a way that is appropriate to any given situation.
Social awareness: The ability to empathize with others and expand their perspective to those from different backgrounds and cultures.
Self-awareness: The ability to establish and cultivate healthy relationships with individuals and groups.
SISD has partnered with RethinkED which is a user friendly SEL Technology based tool that all teachers and educators can use. Below is some information about RethinkED, the history behind it, and some of the tools that are used to teach the SEL Lessons.
