Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
January 8th-12th
What's Going On This Week:
- Math: This week we will review math concepts taught over the past two quarters. We will continue our timed tests next week not this week. Students should continue studying their math facts nightly. We will also start our next short unit on Thursday on graphing using a coordinate plane. This unit is about a week long so students will take a quiz and turn in proof boxes by the end of next week.
- ELA: 3rd Quarter's ELA focus will be on nonfiction. We will start looking at nonfiction text features and structures. This week we will also take a closer look at Martin Luther King's Jr's life and his famous, "I have a dream" speech. We will also be wrapping up our next unit of Word of the Day words soon and students will be taking a quiz over words 21-40.
- Social Studies: This week is our final week of our Global Expansion unit in Social Studies. We will explore the creation of the Panama Canal and review the causes and effects of the Spanish American War. Students will take a test over this unit on Tuesday the 16th. After this unit, we will switch back for our next Science unit.
It's That Time of Year
With the winter weather really starting this month, there may be days when the district has called for e-learning. If that happens, know that your child will have assignments posted in google classroom to complete before we return the following day.
- I will also be holding office hours from 1-2 pm, which is a time for students to log in and ask questions or get help with assignments. The office hours will be in our google meet.
- Aside from the optional office hours, there will be no mandated log in time. Students can work at their own pace as long as they finish the assignments before the following day.
- All assignments will be posted together in one place in google classroom and should include math, writing, reading, and science/social studies. Students are expected to independently read for 30 minutes. here will also be a related arts choice board to complete.
If students do not have access to a computer, please let me know and I will print them (if we know ahead of time) a paper packet.
This Week's Events
- Students who served (1st semester) or are currently serving on safety patrol are invited Thursday to a pizza party during lunch. They will not need to bring a lunch on that day unless they do not want to eat the provided pizza.
- Our school ticket store is Friday 12th. Students will be able to purchase items using any tickets they've accumulated so far this year. Our individual class ticket stores and raffles will also be on January 12th and 26th.
