The hero sandwich or simply hero consist of a long thin loaf of bread often called a hero loaf. Heroes are known by different names in different parts of the country. They are also known as submarines, grinders, po'boys, or hoagies.

Po'Boys
Known as a traditional submarine sandwich from Louisiana. Po'boys are mostly consist of meat these types of meat, like roast beef or fried seafood. It's served on a baguette like New Orleans French bread known for its crisp crust and fluffy center.
Hoagie
The term hoagie originated in the Philadelphia area. Italians working at the World War I era shipyard in Philadelphia , known as Hog Island introduced the sandwich, by putting different meats, cheeses, and lettuce between two slices of bread. A traditional hoagie is made on a hero loaf with provolone cheese covering meat, raw chunks of onions, and slabs of tomato. It is dressed with oregano, salt, pepper, olive oil, and hot pepper relish
Grinder
It's a New England term thats possibly could've came from Italian American slang. Others say the grinder got it name because it took a lot of chewing the hard crust. In western Massachusetts a grinder is specifically a toasted sub, the sub is toasted in a pizza oven. In Pennsylvania and Delaware, the term grinder refers to a submarine sandwich that has been heated in any way.
