Updates for April 20 - 25, 2015
Prayers
As you may be aware Martha Lane Collins High School student Keaton McMurray lost his battle with cancer this weekend. I did not know Keaton but I know his Titan family and the Shelby County community rallied around him. I have heard the stories of the lives he has touched. His family and friends will need our thoughts and prayers in the coming days. Please keep them close to your heart.
Martin's Musings
Why do you teach? I know why I do. It is my in my heart; it is my passion. I want to touch the lives of children. I want to ignite the kindling for learning so children are driven to succeed, to become a life long learners. I love seeing the light bulbs go off. To this day I remember the first child I taught to read. It was my second year of teaching and this child was a second grader. Yes, he was in his 3rd year of school before that lightbulb went off. It was an amazing feeling. I can remember my teachers who did just that for me; they touched my life and left me inspired, I knew they believed in me.
As we move closer to the end of the year I want you to remember that. Remember why you teach. Remember to finish strong. We have curriculum left to cover, MAP and KPREP testing to complete. But bigger than that we have children setting in front of us who need to know that you believe in them, that you want to see them succeed and become life long learners. Finish strong with them.
MAP Testing
This week MAP testing begins. We are starting with Language Usage. 6th grade will start their testing Monday morning during second period. Remind all students to work toward their goals. I know some teachers are reviewing goals before they start. Make sure you are taking the time to do so. We will be adding a little incentive. Listen closely to announcements in the morning as it is shared with students. Also, remind students that this is the last opportunity to show growth this year. These scores will help teachers as they plan for the classes for next year so show what you know.
Other important events this week!
- CERT testing for 7th graders will be on Friday, April 24. There should be no schedule change. We will need to make a few changes for lunch.
- 8th Grade Kid Talk for Gold team on Tuesday, April 21.
- Club day will be on Wednesday, April 22 of this week. Your club will only have one other meeting this year that is scheduled during the day. If you haven't completed your service project make sure you get that accomplished. We have had come great ones so far: Reading Reindeer, Cards for veterans, Canned Food Drive, and more.
