Principal's Message: Mr. de la Cruz
Dear Burnet Middle School Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back to a new and exciting school year at Burnet Middle School! We hope you had a restful and enjoyable summer break. We are thrilled to have our students returning to campus for another year of learning, growth, and achievement.
**Important Information for the First Week: **
1. **Breakfast and Morning Routine: ** Students are welcome to join us for breakfast starting at 8:00 AM in the cafeteria. For those who choose not to eat breakfast, there will be supervision at the front of the school until 8:15 AM. At 8:15 AM, a bell will ring signaling all students to proceed to their classes.
2. **Homeroom Assignments: ** As students arrive at school, they will find posters displayed throughout the cafeteria. These posters will list student names in alphabetical order, along with their assigned homeroom. Homeroom assignments will serve as the starting point for students each day during the first week of school.
3. **Schedules: ** Students will receive their class schedules in their homeroom classes. Please remind your child to keep their schedule in a safe place for reference throughout the week. There will be tables with your student’s name and the first class they need to report to in the cafeteria and outside the front doors.
4. **Back-to-School Supplies: ** We understand that tax-free weekend presents an opportunity for back-to-school shopping. We kindly request that you focus on purchasing basic materials such as backpacks, pens, pencils, and notebooks at this time.
5. **Chromebook Distribution: ** Students can look forward to receiving their Chromebooks by the end of the second week of school. This technology will be an essential tool to support their learning throughout the year.
6. **School Dismissal: ** The school day will end promptly at 3:50 PM. If your child is a bus rider, we ask for your support in reminding them to board the bus promptly to ensure a timely departure. For students who walk, please encourage them to leave school promptly as well.
We are committed to providing a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment where all students can thrive academically and socially. Our dedicated staff is here to support your child's growth and success, and we look forward to partnering with you throughout the school year.
Thank you for entrusting us with your child's education. Let's work together to make this school year a memorable and rewarding experience. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact our school office at 512-414-3225.
Here's to a fantastic school year ahead!
Sincerely,
Larry De La Cruz

HB 114-NEW INFORMATION
The Austin ISD Student Success Guide (Student Code of Conduct) is now available on the Austin ISD District website for students, parents, and guardians to review. One important legislative update is that ALL e-cigarettes (THC and Tobacco) are prohibited. House Bill 114 requires a student to be placed in the District Alternative Education Program (DAEP) if the student possesses, uses, is under the influence, sells, gives, or delivers marijuana, THC, or an e-cigarette (new) while on campus, within 300 feet of school property, or at a school-related event. Under Austin ISD guidelines, this is a 20-day DAEP placement. Parents and guardians are strongly urged to talk to their students about this new policy and review the Student Success Guide to help keep our schools safe for students and staff. For resources to use when talking with your student about the harmful effects of e-cigarettes visit https://e-cigarettes.surgeongeneral.gov/.

Burnet MS Cell Phone Policy
For the 22-23 school year the cell phone policy will be enforced as follows:
All student cell phones should be out of sight from 8:20-3:50. This includes earbuds/airpods, they too should be out of site. It has become increasingly disruptive to the Burnet learning environment. Students are using phones to engage in social media/texting instead of focusing on their academics more than pre pandemic. Students all have a one to one devices and hence will not need cell phones for their learning. Students are expected to bring their Chromebook every day. Cell phones will also not be seen during the lunch time.
If students cell phone is seen by any staff member it will be picked up and turned in to the front office for the following:
1st time: Parent must come pick up the phone/earbuds/airbuds or student can pay a $15 dollar fine
2nd time: Parent must come pick up the phone/earbuds/airbuds and pay a $15 dollar fine
3rd time: Parent will be asked to have student leave phone/earbuds/airbuds at home
If the student refuses to give the phone/earbuds/airbuds to the teacher after being reminded several times, a student referral will be written and the phone/earbuds/airbuds will be confiscated by the administrator. The parent will be called to pick up the phone and pay for the $15. If the student complies and turns it in to the teacher, then they have an opportunity to pay $15 and get the phone/earbuds/airbuds or the parent can come for a conference and get the phone/earbuds/airbuds back with no fine. If it is continuous or a refusal of turning the over phone/earbuds/airbuds the fine will be given.
If any parent needs to give a message, please use our 512-414-3225 to speak to one of our clerks and the message will be delivered to the student. If a student needs to get a hold of the parent, students can be allowed to use campus phones as long as it is not a disruption to the learning environment.
