Welcome to The Morris Minute!

This is the place to find updates for staff, parents, and families of Morris Elementary. Thank you for checking it out!

From The Desk of Mr. Anderson...

Hello Morris Families!

Another year has almost come to a close! May is such a fast moving month, the end will be here before we know it. You guessed it! Here comes the annual "Mr. Anderson wants to take time to remind everyone that we still have a month of school left to help our kids continue to grow as students and citizens. That's plenty of time to make a positive impact speech"! We look at it as if we have another 15 days to be impactful, and I hope your children feel the same way!

Our students did a wonderful job listening to teachers and directions during our lockdown drill the other day! Lockdown is only a portion of what we will cover with students, as well as covering other aspects of safety with teachers and staff. Many great questions were brought to our teachers' attention during and after the drill. We look to improve those drills the more we do them, and our frequency will be increasing next year for these drills.

With a lot of activities planned at the school, field trips, and field days, I also want to extend a huge THANK YOU to all volunteers that are going to be helping with those, as well as other activities throughout this year that required many hands. We have the best group of volunteers on the planet! The Elementary PTO and the District-wide Party of Bluejays committees also deserve huge THANK YOUs for their hard work and dedication to our students. We benefit greatly from these organizations and the efforts they put forth for our children. Our work is never done and the work is never easy for you, them, or us! We are glad to have partners like you all!

Have a great spring and summer everyone! It has been another great year at Morris and I look forward to another as we will gather next fall for the 2018-2019 school year!

Yours In Education,

Mr. Anderson

Be sure your student has appropriate shoes for gym class and recess! Sandals and flip-flops do not allow your child to fully participate in all activities.

The Crayon Initiative

Morris is participating in The Crayon Initiative - a recycling program for used crayons. Crayons collected here will be remanufactured into new crayons and donated to children's hospitals. Students can bring used crayons (no need to remove wrappers) in to put them in the collection box in the front office. Please send your broken crayons in through the end of the year. For more information, please visit www.thecrayoninitiative.org

Morris Yearbooks

Should be arriving in the next week or so - we are always a few weeks behind Anderson. Please be patient, we will get them distributed as soon as we receive them.

Morris Artists to be on Display at the Des Moines Art Festival!

Mr. Vander Linden, Mr. Anderson, and Mrs. Bahr all congratulated our four artists who will have art on display at the Des Moines Art Festival this summer. While at the festival be sure to look for the works of Emerson Berkenes, Adelyn Bruce, Mimi Jackson, and Abigail Applegate! After the Festival, their work will be on display at the Des Moines Central Library (by the Pappajohn Sculpture Garden) before the work finally makes it back home to its creators. Congrats to our wonderful artists!

Be sure to check the Community Link!

Remember you can find lots of great information on the Community Link. If you want to print out the PE Calendar, I also load it there as a single page so you can print it. :) With events going on throughout the summer, I will continue to add community events, so be sure to check back over the summer too!

A few practical items and sappy notes from Ms. Jen

As we begin our last month of the school year, we are already working on things for next fall. Be on the lookout for emails from me throughout the summer about registration, school supplies, and all of the fun back to school details that I will share as we get closer to August. Most importantly, have a wonderful summer with your kids! We have enjoyed their company this year and have loved watching them grow as kind and helpful kids, and as lifetime learners. I will miss all of the second graders as they move on to Anderson next year. I can't promise not to cry as they walk out of the building on May 25, but I can promise to smile when I see them next time! Have a great rest of the year! -jen
