Mill Hall Elementary
Keystone Central School District
Notes From the Principal
Although November is a shorter school month, we have been packing our days full!
- On November 3rd, the W.O.W. Paw winners enjoyed Pancakes with the Principal. Each week students are selected by their teachers to be a W.O.W. Paw winner based on that students demonstration of our school-wide expectations. W.O.W. winners randomly draw numbers for our Principal's W.O.W. board. When a row of numbers is completed, those students earn a special incentive with Dr. Breon.
- We had a memorable time celebrating Veteran's Day with special guests who have served our country. While students were able to show their appreciation for the Veterans' service, the Veterans were able to share some stories of their time in service (favorite foods, how they communicated with family, etc.)
- Another group of W.O.W. winners earned Pop-tarts with Dr. Breon on November, 23rd.
- Our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) celebration for the month of November was a school-wide BINGO game on November, 23rd. Lots of winners were seen smiling throughout the halls.
- In addition, our students have reached out to help others in November. Students brought in carts full of donations for the Clinton County SPCA, boxes of food for Homeless and Hunger Awareness week, and donated hundreds of dollars in pennies for Sleep in Heavenly Peace (for making beds for children in need) and to be able to wear their pajamas to school. The joy of giving was definitely seen on many of their faces.
As we gear up for the month of December, we look forward to enjoying the wonders of the season through the eyes of children and making memories that they will remember for years to come.

December/January Federal Programs Updates
All elementary schools will conduct full school assessment screenings of math and reading progress in January. Our intervention teams use this information to update WIN groups (What I Need), and from what we are seeing so far, our students are growing rapidly!
On December 6th, elementary schools will send home progress reports to keep families updated on student progress. All families in all schools should have received Quarter 1 report cards in November. If you did not receive the report card for Quarter 1, please contact your child's school secretary.
At all school levels, we use Title IV federal funds to purchase incentives for PBIS (our positive school-wide behavior supports) rewards, and we emphasize the goal of following school rules in all schools.

Family Connections
Volunteer Work and Resources for Supports
Volunteer work is an important aspect of our community and culture. Many organizations and churches that give to our community are only able to do so through the work of volunteers. Volunteering helps people and children better understand compassion and empathy. Volunteering can even be a fun experience for you and your family. Kids and teens that volunteer may:
- See that they can make a difference
- Meet people with similar values
- Practice life skills
- Learn about different careers
- Experience different cultures
Please also review the above websites to see if you or your family could benefit from any of the services they offer.

#KeystoneCares - January is Attendance Counts Month!
ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Strong attendance has a proven impact on school success. Chronic absence — missing 10 percent or more of school days due to absence for any reason—excused, unexcused absences and suspensions, can translate into third-graders unable to master reading, sixth-graders failing subjects and ninth-graders dropping out of high school.
The faculty and staff of KCSD encourage parents to ensure that scholars attend school everyday in order to achieve academic success!
When we return on January 3rd from winter break, we will have been in school for 75 days. If your student has missed less than 7.5 days at this point, they are within the target attendance rate. Check your parent portal account to see how many days of school your student has missed.
If you are concerned about your student's attendance, please reach out to your student's school counselor.
Counseling Connection
SAP
If you are concerned about a student for any reason, you can make a SAP referral. The SAP referral can potentially lead to any needed services and/or supports the student may need to be successful.
Conflict Resolution
Assisting children in resolving conflicts with siblings/friends is an important aspect of emotional development—but solving the problem for children, rather than assisting children in resolving problems on their own, can prevent the development of vital conflict-resolution and problem-solving skills. The following article was written for teachers, however, it contains creative ways to help your child identify big emotions, self-regulate, and resolve interpersonal conflicts on their own: Conflict Management
Our Classrooms also use the Second Step program to help students with their emotional development. Second Step teaches students skills that strengthen their ability to learn, have empathy, manage emotions, and solve problems. The photo outlines the steps this program encourages to solve a problem:
S: Say the Problem
T: Think of Solutions
E: Explore Consequences
P: Pick the Best Solution
Below are book lists that support children in conflict management as well as other social emotional areas.
