Parent/Teacher Conferences will be virtual this fall and will not take place in the school building. They will be held on the following dates:
Monday, Oct. 12, 12:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 13, 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
The sign-up session for conferences will start Thursday, Oct. 1 at 7:00 a.m. and will close Thursday, Oct. 8 at 9:00 p.m.
Conferences for all grades should be scheduled using the online conference scheduler. As there are limited spots available, we ask that School of Grammar families schedule only with their classroom teacher and any specialists (music, Latin, art, phys ed) they would like to meet with.
Please note, you will need to know which teachers you would like to schedule a conference with prior to logging into the scheduler, as the scheduler will not link your child to their teachers. Your child’s teachers may be found under the schedule tab in the left index in your Infinite Campus parent portal. If you need assistance logging into the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, please contact Janice Gerheart. Please use the master password that will be sent via email next week to log into the conference scheduler. If you have not used the conference scheduler in the past year, you will need to create a user account.

Helping Your Child with Distance Learning - Janelle Mellgren, Principal, School of Grammar & Erin Johnson, Principal, Schools of Logic & Rhetoric
Eagle Ridge Academy Families,
Thank you for all your patience and flexibility as we’ve begun our very unusual year of learning together. While everything may not be working as smoothly as we hope it soon will, overall it’s been a very successful start to the year. This is due to the efforts of you, our students, and our staff, and we are grateful.
Please take note of a few things that will ensure student learning continues to improve, as well as a note about our newly created resource, which we hope will be of help to all of you when you are supporting your children’s learning at home.
During Synchronous Class times
- Please try to have your child set up for the meeting in a space where there will be minimum disruptions.
- Please do not use photography or any recording equipment (including Zoom recording) during the Zoom session.
- Once your child is set up for their Zoom meeting, please allow them to attend the session by themselves, as much as possible, as would happen with a classroom session.
- Be aware of what others might see behind your child, including things which might affect your family's privacy.
- Everyone who might appear on camera needs to wear clothing.
- If you decide to sit in on a class, let the teacher know via chat or an e-mail prior that you are there. Teachers like to know to whom they’re presenting that day.
Helping Your Child Be an Independent Learner
- Remind them to be on time.
- Let your child be the student. It’s important that teachers hear from your child so they best understand what they’ve learned. The goal isn’t always a correct answer, but rather for the teacher to see what the child has learned and what else they may need.
- Respect the teacher and the classroom. Please don’t interrupt the teacher during their instruction or expect that they will be able to communicate with you while they are teaching.
- Your child is learning from home, but when they are logged in, they are in a real classroom.
- It’s okay to let your child struggle with their learning during class sometimes, this is a natural part of the learning process. If it’s continual and/or across many times of the day, let your child’s teacher know.
If you are experiencing issues at home accessing the school materials or using the technology platforms, please call the newly created Eagle Ridge Academy Academic & Technology Hotline 952-746-7760 ext. 1704 or email helphotline@eagleridgeacademy.org.
Kindly,
Schools of Logic & Rhetoric Notes - Erin Johnson, Principal
With nearly four weeks under our belts, we have learned a lot: technology is, in equal measure, wonderful and frustrating; relationships are everything and we value the relationships with the students, in whatever capacity we can foster them, and we longingly look ahead to when we can have every student back in the building on a daily basis.
One person with whom our Schools of Logic and Rhetoric students will develop a relationship is our new College and Academic Advisor, Ms. Mary Johnson. Ms. Johnson comes to us with a wealth of experience in college and academic planning, a desire to connect with students, and a drive to help them achieve. Please welcome her to our Eagle Ridge Academy community!
To this end, one of her duties is to oversee some of the testing we offer students, including AP tests, PSAT (for 11th grade students), and CLT (for 9th and 10th grade students).
The PSAT is offered at Eagle Ridge Academy on Thursday, October 29, and the cost is covered by the school. This test is a paper and pencil test. Students should plan on coming to the school to fill out the pre-test work on Friday, October 23, from 9:00-11:00 a.m., and plan to be in the building to take the test on Thursday, October 29.
The Classic Learning Test (CLT) is a college entrance assessment rooted in measuring students’ ability to critically think and reason using passages from great works studied within the Classical tradition. Over the past year, Eagle Ridge has been exploring the option of introducing this exam to students. Many other Classical schools around the nation have adopted this exam as an alternate to the ACT. Eagle Ridge Academy does not take adding an additional assessment to the school day lightly. Therefore, we are replacing an interim assessment (DDI) in 9th and 10th grade humanities with the CLT. In addition to providing students with insight into their academic strengths and opportunities for growth, this data will also provide teachers with information to improve their instruction. This will be given to all 9th and 10th grade students on Tuesday, October 20, with pre-testing information sent at a later date. More information explaining this test will be sent to families shortly.
Please send any questions regarding these tests or other academic and college needs to Ms. Mary Johnson, at majohnson@eagleridgeacademy.org.
Introducing Ms. Mary Johnson, New Academic Advisor
Hello Eagle Ridge Academy families,
I am an Illinois native recently transplanted to Minnesota in June of 2020. I have been educating, advising, and counseling students in grades K-12 as well as in community colleges and universities for over 20 years.
I received my bachelor’s degree in Vocational Education Studies from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, a master’s degree in Workforce Education and Development also from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and a master’s degree in Human Development Counseling from the University of Illinois Springfield.
I have been married to Mr. Johnson for almost 31 years. We have three children: a daughter who works in a medical spa in St. Louis, MO, a daughter who works for Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL, and a son who is still in college, currently living in Minnesota, working and going to school. We also have four poodles: two standard poodles, Duke and Olivia, and two toy poodles, Hershey and Mr. Schuster (Yes, he was named after Will Schuster from the TV show Glee!)
In the little bit of spare time I can find, I like to read. I like all genres of books except for horror; I am not a Stephen King fan at all! I’m not much of a cold weather person either. I love the ocean and the beach. Hopefully I will survive the Minnesota winters!
I’m very excited to be a part of the Eagle Ridge family and look forward to working with the students and their families to make their Eagle Ridge Academy experience the best it can be and to help them prepare for whatever it is they choose to do after they leave Eagle Ridge Academy.
Sincerely,
Ms. MJ
Please Complete Mandatory Survey Daily - Paula Kofflin, School Nurse
In accordance with the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for COVID health screening, all staff and students must complete a COVID-19 Mandatory Survey every morning. The Mandatory Survey is required for all staff and hybrid students DAILY, regardless of whether they will be in the building.
Staff members or students that exhibit symptoms related to COVID-19, have been exposed, or are presumed positive for COVID-19 will need to contact Paula Kofflin, school nurse, PRIOR to coming to school to discuss next steps. Her phone number is 952.747.7760 ext. 1301.
If your child is home ill but still well enough to participate in distance learning, please note on your child’s mandatory survey that he/she will not be in school, but will join remotely, so that the attendance can be updated and your child will not be marked absent.
Parents and staff can access the Mandatory Survey on the Eagle Ridge Academy website. If we have not received your health screening by 7:00 a.m., you will receive a reminder text message to complete the screening. Please see below for steps on completing the Mandatory Survey.
Do You Need Aid? Gryphon Athletics Open to All - Kris Babler, Director of Activities
One of the founding objectives of Eagle Ridge Academy Activities was to be a driver of participation. Getting as many students involved as possible has been a guiding light for us here. We are proud of what our coaches and co-curricular leaders have accomplished in this regard.
We have heard that one of the constant barriers to participation is cost. This year we implemented a formal fee reduction policy for our grades 7-12 athletic programs. This form is found here. Submission is confidential between the activities department and admissions. We want as many families as possible to be actively involved and engaged as Gryphons and believe this will help us accomplish this goal.
I am happy to report that both our soccer and cross-country programs have been operating safely. Over the last month, we have seen no team spread of COVID-19. This is important as we continue to assess the feasibility of other 2020-2021 programs.
Participation in varsity soccer and cross-country is up a few percentage points from last year. We will continue to pursue ways to grow, strengthen and improve these programs.
2021-2022 Enrollment Kickoff! - Janice Gerheart, Admissions Specialist
It is time to begin the application process for the 2021-2022 school year. The application will be available on October 1, 2020 and the 2021-2022 enrollment lottery will take place on January 19, 2021.
If you have children you wish to enroll, please complete an application by January 15, 2021 in order to be considered in the lottery.
If you have friends, family members, or colleagues looking to enroll their children in an amazing school, please pass my information on to them. Tours and information meetings will not take place in the building this fall; however, we are working on virtual options.
Sincerely,
Janice Gerheart

Canvas and Infinite Campus: Viewing Your Child's Progress
One of the many wonderful features of Canvas is the feedback from teachers regarding students’ growth as human beings and scholars. You, as a parent, also have access to view your child’s progress. However, you might be wondering: Do I look in Canvas or Infinite Campus? Here’s a breakdown of the information provided in each of these platforms.
Canvas is a parent’s “go-to” for the most accurate, ongoing student and class information from the teacher. If you have yet to set up a parent account, please visit Canvas information on our webpage at https://www.eagleridgeacademy.org/students-and-families/canvas/.

Register Now for Robotics Programs! - Derek Lutz, Robotics Advisor
Since then, the program has not rested on past accomplishments but pressed on to find innovative ways to develop their new program. That has included forming a lower school robotics team, FIRST LEGO League (FLL), two years ago. Each year we have seen 60+ lower school students participate in FLL during the school year, and last year our very own team Hydra finished in second place in the State Tournament based on scoring! The school has hosted FLL tournaments in the spring and camps in the summer for new and experienced robotics students. If you are in grades 4-6 and think you may be interested, sign up and join a team!
The program continues to expand to meet the needs of the ERA community. This year, we are launching a middle school robotics program partnered with FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC). FTC is for students in grades 6-8 who are interested in learning about the mechanical and electrical workings of a machine and/or programming. You can sign up here.
This program is designed to bridge the current gap between our FLL teams and our FRC teams, and is perfect for new or experienced students. That’s not all though! We are also opening up a Junior FIRST LEGO League team for grades 2-3. This program is perfect for young students wanting to explore the world of robotics and LEGOs. You can sign up here.
All of these programs listed are in-person, but the number of members on each team will be limited to reduce the number of people in the room. If you think you may be interested, be sure to sign up as soon as possible. There will be safety measures in place but, at times, students may need to be within six feet of each other.
In an effort to reduce team size we are planning to have multiple different teams, as well. For example, we usually have 5-6 FLL teams running at the same time. In order to have more teams, though, we need more parent mentors! If you would be able to mentor your child’s team, we will be able to have more teams and have more students participate. If you choose to be a mentor, the activity fee for your child will be waived this year. We are looking for mentors at every level: JFLL: Grades 2-3, FLL: Grades 4-6, FTC: Grades 6-8, and FRC: Grades 9-12.
Are you looking for ways to help, but can’t mentor one of the programs? Consider making a donation to the program or exploring options to sponsor the robotics team. Between the four programs at ERA, the operating costs of our program exceed $20,000, so every little bit helps.
For more information about the ERA Robotics programs, becoming a mentor, or funding the team, please reach out to Derek Lutz at dlutz@eagleridgeacademy.org.
What is First Robotics?
FIRST® is an acronym meaning “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.” It is a formal international nonprofit organization established in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen in hopes of fostering interest among high school students in the fields of engineering and technology. Under strict rules and with limited resources, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team brand, hone teamwork skills, design, build, and program a robot that operates remotely and that performs pre-established functions in a competitive environment.
FIRST® Robotics also promotes communication and a strong education in math and science. The objective is not only to build a robot, but to bring together what is being taught in school with real world experience guided by professionals in fields like engineering, marketing, and communications. Working with engineers allows students to immerse themselves in the engineering process to gain useful and real world knowledge of the application of math and science. FIRST® Robotics emphasizes its own unique type of sportsmanship called Gracious Professionalism™. This concept stresses helping everyone, even competitors. It is said that the robot is not the most important thing, nor is winning, but rather the experience gained by the students as they work through the process from beginning to end.

All Student Meals Free Until January! - Brittany Radtke, Chef, bradtke@eagleridgeacademy.org
The USDA announced that they will be extending the Free Summer Food Service Program (tentatively) through the end of 2020. All student meals (in-school breakfast and lunch, childcare breakfast and lunch, and take-home meal bundles) are now FREE.
Please keep in mind the following stipulations:
1. Staff and students must be prepared to pivot back to the regular National School Lunch Program (NSLP) if funds run out through Minnesota Department of Education. They currently project to have the budget to provide free meals until Dec. 31, 2020, but we have to be prepared if that changes.
2. ERA will be an Open Site for meals. This means that we will provide take-home meals for all ERA enrolled students as well as siblings that are ages 18 and younger. Take-home meal pick up is available on Fridays from 11:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. If there is no school on Friday, communication will be sent out to parents the week before to inform them of the pickup day. Pre-order forms must be completed WEEKLY. These forms help us not waste food or paper goods. If you forget to submit your order, walk-ins are welcome, but you may have to wait for your order to be made. Vegetarian and Combo (Meat and Vegetarian) Bundles are available each week.
3. If ERA students are in school for in-person learning or child care, lunch and breakfast meals are free and no pre-order is necessary. Vegetarian and meat-based options are available every day.
4. Also, it is EXTREMELY important that you continue to apply for free and reduced meals. If funding runs out and we need to pivot back to the NSLP system, students will go back to being charged full price, unless they are already approved for free and reduced meals. You can find the application here.
5. A la carte items will still be available for School of Rhetoric students and are NOT FREE. Students must have a POSITIVE lunch account balance to purchase these items.
6. If your child has a food allergy and needs special food made, please fill out a Special Diet Request Form and follow the instructions on how to submit it to the school. When submitting your weekly meal requests, please note the allergy so staff is aware that you ordered.
See below for October Menus. For more Food Services information, visit https://www.eagleridgeacademy.org/students-and-families/food-services/.
