Topic Overview
Join us at the December ADP for an informative panel discussion with representatives from Student Financial Services and Bursar, a conversation on self-care over the holidays, and a wrap-up “deskercise” with Anthony from the REC Center!
Schedule
1:00pm – 2:00pm - Panel discussion with Bursar (Ashli Talley) and SFS (Emilie Van Trieste)
2:00pm – 2:20pm - Prepping for the holiday break by addressing our stressors and practicing self-care
2:20pm – 3:00pm – “Deskercise” with Anthony from the REC Center
Learning Objectives
- Gain a clearer understanding of the differences between Student Financial Services and the Bursar’s Office and the many things they do to assist students with their financial needs.
- Become increasingly confident in your skills as an Academic Advisor to effectively address (within our capabilities) students with financial needs and/or refer them to the appropriate office.
- Challenge yourself to self-reflect on your holiday stressors and the coping mechanisms you use to address these stressors.
- Feel confident about using our winter break time off wisely through self-care.
- Learn skills for staying active throughout the workday, even if it's from your desk.
This session will be held in Mitten Hall 110 Multipurpose Room from 1PM- 3PM.

Let's Team Up: How a Team-Based Approach to Academic Advising Can Improve STEM Student Success
Keith Schweiger, Laurence Mahoney- Jones, and Dylan Stevens
"Team advising is a new approach to student success. This presentation will explore an innovative advising model that was adapted to best serve the STEM student population at a large, division 1, research institution. The presenters will compare and contrast different advising models while sharing personal experiences with each model. By attending this session, participants will walk away with a revised understanding of how to best serve our ever-changing student populations."
What Would You Do? Practicing Ethical Decision-Making in Advising
Dina Maslennikova, Jordan Greenwood, and Meghan Byrnes (Rutgers)
"As advisors, we abide not only by legal guidelines and institutional policies, but our individual ethical principles. However, advisors frequently encounter "gray areas" in decision-making that require us to balance our responsibilities to many stakeholders, often resulting in tension between aspects of our roles. These situations can create feelings of uncertainty, anxiety, and less confidence in one's decision-making abilities. This session will focus on how the practice of ethical decision-making can minimize these feelings while still allowing advisors to honor their responsibilities towards the student, the institution, and themselves. We will begin by briefly discussing the development of personal ethical principles, followed by a group discussion of case scenarios centered on ethical decision-making. This presentation is appropriate for all advisors, particularly those new to the profession."
Advisor Development: Don't Leave it to Chance!
Amanda Neuber, Janet Distel, Joy Stroman, Candice Frazer, and Michele O’Connor
"Advisor training and development is not a game of chance! It should be strategic, intentional, and fun while providing both first-year and seasoned advisors the right pieces upon which to build skills. In this interactive session, advisors and advising administrators from Temple University's Advisor Development Program (ADP) will share how we designed our highly collaborative, university-wide training and development program (by advisors, for advisors!) that balances NACADA recommendations with institutional priorities. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn how to map training and development topics to NACADA core competencies and will be invited to conceptualize how to implement (or improve) advisor development at their own institutions. Join us! Because advisor development shouldn't be left to a roll of the dice."

Fixer Upper: Inclusive Office Edition
Zach Martin, Jacki Graves, and Candice Frazer
"Who doesn't love a good design show? What about one that specifically caters to creating inclusive environments for students? In this session, learn to reassess your office set up and decor so students feel more comfortable in your space and ultimately have a more productive advising session. Today is "Demo Day" and we're ready to help you scrape off those proverbial popcorn ceilings! Bring your inner Chip and Joanna to this session as we create and discuss inclusivity within our offices. The only question we have is "Are y'all ready to see your fixer upper?""

In the Mid-Level Advisor's Corner: Celebrating the Real 'Unsung Heroes' of NACADA
"In a competitive profession like higher education, the climb to the top can be difficult. When promotions are unavailable to mid-level professionals, it can be challenging for them to feel appreciated in their role. In reality, when a vertical path is unavailable at an institution, it could be horizontal movements that afford the best opportunities for aiding in professional branding. Join the conversation to learn how you can forge a rich, rewarding career independent of the conventional "climbing the ladder" approach and can engage in your own #HorizontalBranding on and off campus. Join a panel discussion of mid-level practitioners to review new strategies to overcome your struggles and conquer your role!"
The Mentoring Derby: Engaging Advisors to Be at Their GREATEST!
"This panel presentation will highlight the benefits and challenges of 'advisor-to-advisor' mentoring relationships. Several dyads of mentors and mentees will present their experiences. The panel is comprised of a diverse group of advising practitioners representing many differences such as gender, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic level, and institutional type. Information from research related to mentoring will be included. Join the session to hear how mentoring partnerships can be assigned and begin quickly or develop over many years, sometimes beginning very informally and growing to positive formal mentorships."
