Florence 1 Orchestra Students to Perform at Carnegie Hall
Six Wilson High School students have been invited to perform in the Honors String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in New York City on February 10. According to Marion Gomez, Program Director of the Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall, acceptance into this elite group is the direct result of the talent, dedication, and achievements demonstrated in the students’ applications. Mark Jackson is the Wilson High School orchestra instructor.

Timrod's Nunnally Honored by the SC Department of Education
Every Tuesday, the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) honors one South Carolina teacher on the SCDE Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts for #TeacherTuesday. The goal of #TeacherTuesday is to honor a teacher who has made a significant impact on their students, school, community and/or the state.
Timrod Elementary’s Patricia Nunnally will be the SCDE's honoree on Tuesday, February 5th. She is one of 51 teachers in the nation recognized for demonstrating commitment to creating an inspirational and harmonious classroom that supports student development and achievement. Academic Team Spotlight, Week 3: Wilson High School
This Week’s Academic Team Feature is from Wilson High School. The team is currently undefeated (3-0). Captains are Alice Lee and Annie Kate Watson. Coaches are Dr. Lucia Huang and Mary Ann Williams.

Grants Awarded to SC School Districts Focused on Improving 4K Quality
For fiscal year 2018-19, a total of $950,00 was awarded to a total of seven initiatives throughout the state.
Included in the total is $240,050 which will be awarded to the Pee Dee Consorita of School Districts which consists of Florence 1 Schools, Florence 2, Florence 3, Florence 4, Dillon 3, Dillon 4, Marion, Darlington and Pee Dee Head Start.
Award-Winning Author to Visit Savannah Grove Elementary
Floyd Cooper is a Coretta Scott King award-winning illustrator of more than 60 books for children. He will be at Savannah Grove Elementary School on Monday, February 4.
Cooper started his career in illustration at Hallmark. After a successful career in the industrial side of art, he made the leap into picture books with Eloise Greenfield’s Grandpa’s Face. Since then Floyd has worked with bestselling authors including Jane Yolen, Nikki Grimes, and Virginia Fleming. Floyd has also illustrated and authored his own books, Jump!, about the life of Michael Jordan, and the ALA notable book, Coming Home, about the life of Langston Hughes.

Carver Book Caravan: Coming to a Community Near You
Carver Elementary School is the recipient of the first Family Literacy Grant awarded by the South Carolina International Reading Association (SCIRA). The project, Carver’s Book Caravan, will receive $500 and it will be awarded at the upcoming SCIRA reading conference. Carver's Calandra M. Brisbone is the author of the grant. The Book Caravan will take free books to students in the Carver community where teachers, reading coaches, and administrators assist parents with reading strategies to help students at home.
