Student & Family Update

12/10/21

Dear MTRS Students and Families:

This week has been a challenging one for our entire school community. But witnessing the way in which our school community took care of each other, I am reminded of how thankful I am to be working here at MTRS. From the students who stepped forward to share something that didn’t feel right, to our educators who gave space for students to share and process what happened, while also taking care of their colleagues--our community came together during a time when it was most needed and I am proud of our work this week.

Our building was buzzing today with great classroom discussions, student projects, and even some dance moves to identify parts of a paragraph! I’m looking forward to more engaged learning in the next few weeks while we wrap up 2021.

Looking Ahead

  • Tuesday, December 14 - Winter concert
  • Wednesday, December 15 - early release

Winter Concert

We are beyond excited to welcome you to the MTRS 2021 Winter Concert! Our students have been putting their skills and effort into making great music every day this year; please consider joining us to celebrate their hard work and watch live music at MTRS once again!

HIGH SCHOOL Performance - TUESDAY, Dec. 14 starting at 4:30 p.m.

Please note, due COVID-19 restrictions and the size of the middle school band -- the middle school band performance will be filmed (stay tuned for that info!).

For more details, please read here or email Nick Lawrence at nlawrence@mtrsd.org.

MTRS visits to elementary schools

We're excited to welcome these future trailblazers to MTRS in the years to come and can't WAIT to see them in our halls! Next week we’ll be on the road again visiting Buckland-Shelburne Elementary, Colrain Central, Hawlemont, and Rowe sixth grade classrooms - sharing how THEY can blaze their trails with us next year!

7th and 8th Grade Math Intervention

Happy December! Intervention is continuing at MTRS and students are working hard! I would like to recommend ways in which you can support your MTRS student in math. Below are just a few suggestions you can use to encourage math practice at home!

Encourage Play and Practice:

  • Play interactive math games or games that include math. These might include: Yahtzee, Monopoly, Life, or Sequence Numbers.

  • Create a game with your student! This could be a board game that has questions that your student and you create. You could incorporate other content areas that interest your student in the questions as well. See the Create Your Own Board Game PDF for steps to create your very own board game with your student.

I would like to invite you to the next LEC meeting where I will be available to talk more about math. I will present additional information about the Title 1 program there as well. Please come join the conversation!

Message From the Nurse’s Office

COVID-19 pool testing

As a reminder, POOL TESTING is required for athletics, extracurriculars, and before- and after-school programs. ALL information can be found on the district’s COVID-19 Information page at www.mtrsd.org/covid-19-information OR by clicking on the “Helpful Links” drop-down from any of the school websites. If you participate in one of the above activities (including coaches and volunteers) -- you MUST sign-up for testing! If you have any questions surrounding the process, procedure, or need additional information, please reach out to our district Nurse Leader Donna Weber at dweber@mtrsd.org or Superintendent Sheryl Stanton at sstanton@mtrsd.org.

TO SIGN UP ONLINE: https://www.cic-health.com/consent/ma?district

Select: Consent Now → Mohawk Trail → (select your school)

For staff, coaches, or anyone over 18 years of age, please select “Sign consent form for yourself.”

For caregivers who need to give consent for their child/ren, please select “Sign consent form for a minor.”

If you are unable to complete the online sign-up/consent, please contact Donna Weber for a paper copy to complete.

Please see this document on when to stay home from school. With the concerns surrounding the Delta variant, it remains important to do the daily screening prior to coming to school every day and staying home if you’re sick. Over the next few days, the district nurses will be updating the COVID-19 section of our family guidance handbook and sharing it with you all.

Also, just another friendly reminder to please complete and send in the annual health form in order for your child to be treated in the health office. If your child has a medication, inhaler, or epipen, the health office will also need a completed medication form from their PCP office. If you are exempting your child from any vaccines, please send in a signed note with the appropriate information.

Currently, there is an issue with a few faxes in the building so please use the front office (413) 625-6652 to send over any necessary paperwork. You can also take a picture or scan and send the paperwork directly to me at this email: Larissa Harrison, lharrison@mtrsd.org

COVID-19 School Planning Task Force updates

The COVID-19 School Planning Task Force convened on Monday this week to discuss concerns over rising COVID-19 cases across the county and district. Additionally, the task force discussed the need for revising protocols surrounding positive case notifications and amending the data dashboard to be school-specific and user-friendly.

As a result, COVID-19 Nurse Leader Donna Weber will now be issuing communication to all district families whenever an individual in the two district system tests positive for COVID-19. Additionally, the newly revised data dashboard will be updated daily by 5 p.m. The dashboard link is embedded in the positive case notifications, but can always be found on the district's COVID-19 Information page: www.mtrsd.org/covid-19-information.

As noted over the past few weeks, COVID-19 caseload numbers are on the rise and we continue to ask for our community to PLEASE stay diligent in following the Fab FIVE to help stop the spread. If you haven't yet scheduled your COVID-19 vaccination (for yourself or a child aged 5-11), please consider scheduling your appointment. Trust the facts; get the VAX! Vaccination helps protect you and your family from COVID-19. Don't forget to wear your masks; wash your hands; maintain physical distancing when feasible; and STAY HOME when you are not feeling well. Together, these mitigation efforts will help us bring our caseload numbers down.
