Grades 4 & 5 Digital Literacy and Internet Safety Presentation - Jan. 25 11:00-12:15
This session is designed to help those young online to understand the basics when it comes to privacy and security in the connected world. No amount of filtering or monitoring tools are sufficient compared to our critical thinking skills and understanding of behaviours and consequences. Plus, any app used to control internet access have limited in capabilities. Unless there is 100% parental supervision every time a child is online, this presentation is necessary to help teach kids the power and openness of the internet and sometimes those who we speak to online may not have our best interests in mind. This program addresses:
Connecting With People Online
- What information to share and not share
- Other people online and online friends
- When people ask for inappropriate pictures
Staying Safe Online
- Social media profiles
- Accounts passwords
- Downloads
- Data privacy and tracking
The Bad Hackers
- What they want
- Fake accounts
- Stopping them
- Seeking help
Dealing with Peer Pressure
Do you remember a time where you have felt pressure to fit in or to be liked by your peers? Kids are faced with different challenges at school, with their friends or their peers, where they feel like they need to do something or act a certain way in order to fit in.
In moments of uncertainty, we want and hope our children to feel confident in the decisions they make regardless of what their peers think. But how can we encourage them to make their own choices or think the way that feels right to them?
Check out this week’s parenting guide from Big Life Journal on ways we can protect our children from peer pressure and to make their own decisions with confidence and leadership.
