Curriculum News
Music- In the month of January, Havel students learned about the great composer Ludwig van Beethoven. They learned about his life and listened to his most famous compositions while following a listening map and participating in other educational activities. The Kindergarten students have begun preparing music for an Animal Boogie spring concert. (date TBD) The sixth grade students continue to advance in band and are learning songs they will perform at the annual Cluster Concert in April.
Gym- It was another great December in the gym with our Blue Blitzen team clenching the Reindeer Games title this year! This month we are finishing up a fun bowling unit with a day of Cosmic Bowling. If you haven’t heard about it, ask your son or daughter. It is typically a favorite day in the day We will be moving in to the exciting world of hockey in a couple weeks where students will work on puck and stick handling skills, eye had coordination, as well as position play and teamwork! It’s a big and exciting month around here in physical education class!
ISM- Kindergarten is finishing their human body unit. First grade will be learning about mammals. Second grade is working on plants. Third grade finished fractions and is working on subtraction. Fourth grade is learning multiplication facts. Fifth grade is working on adding fractions. Sixth grade is developing facility with positive and negative numbers.
Media Center- The Havel Media Center curriculum is rooted in and guided by Hour of Code and Common Sense Media best practices. Hour of Code is the foundation used to teach coding principles to students. Beginning in Kindergarten, students are given a variety of puzzles, challenges, and situations in which they use a blocky coding application to master the process. There is a portion of the Hour of Code program students can also use at home by visiting https://code.org/learn. I most often refer to it as “gaming with a purpose”. These coding activities help build a solid foundation of thinking and learning as students’ progress through each level.
Common Sense Media is an outstanding program that helps students learn to be good digital citizens. Starting as young as Kindergarten, students learn to make choices that keep them safe online and keep their digital diet healthy. This site is amazing for parents as well. Common Sense Media helps parents make smart media choices for their children. The are aged based ratings and reviews for movies, games, apps, TV shows, websites, music, books and so much more. If you haven’t checked it out, give it a try! https://www.commonsensemedia.org
In addition to all of the computer fun, the Media Center is filled with thousands of books for the students to check out and enjoy each week. Each student is encouraged to check out two library books a week, with the exception of Kindergarten who checks out one per teachers request. All books are due one week from the date of check out. Fines are not charged for overdue or late materials; however, a student will not be allowed to check out another book if they have overdue books on their accounts. When the books are returned, or paid for if lost, the student can resume checking out books. Books that are overdue for a lengthy amount of time will be considered lost and the student will be asked to cover the price of the book and the processing materials required to put a new copy back into circulation. This fee will be refunded should the book be found and returned at a later date.
The Media Center is collecting front of birthday, holiday, or any greeting cards. These will be made into bookmarks that the students can choose in the Media Center. When the cards are cut apart they are like a puzzle piece. Students enjoy choosing their bookmark and pairing it with a friends choice. This activity also supports our Michigan Green School status as we are repurposing the cards. Card donations can be sent to the Media Center.
