100 Days of Kindergarten!
We will be celebrating 100 days of Kindergarten next Thursday, January 26th. Please send 100 small items to school with your child that day. Some ideas are pennies, small erasers, Legos or other small blocks, cereal...anything goes as long as it can fit in a gallon Ziplock baggie. Let me know if you have any questions!
Reading/Daily 5
We are reading and writing more and more each day. Blending sounds to make words is a struggle for many students. You can easily work on this skill at home but dictating a word and having your student write it out and/or writing a word yourself and having them write it out (words such as hit, tip, cat, map, etc.). Visualization was a key reading skill we discussed this week. I explained that as they get to be older and better readers that their books will not have as many pictures. Visualization is an important skill for good readers to have so that they can come up with their own pictures of the story in their minds. "And" was added to our sight words list this week, so look for the new word lists coming home in your student's communication binder.
Math
The Kindergarteners enjoyed learning about graphs! Last week, we practiced writing numbers using tallies and then putting them in a tally chart. This week, we used many tally charts to fill in picture graphs, pictographs, and bar graphs. We also enjoyed surveying our friends to gather information for graphing. If you haven't done so, check out the short video of the students surveying each other for their favorite colors on Class Dojo!
Social Studies
We continued to look at maps this week as we talked about different landforms (mountains, hills, plains, and islands) and bodies of water (oceans, lakes, rivers, and streams).
Our favorite part of the week...
Alivia

Brevin

Colsen
