Weekly Update Newsletter November 14th - 17th
HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK:
Veterans Day Assembly
Yesterday, The Franklin Academy honored our Veterans, parents and grandparents of students joined us as we recognized those who have served.
We had a range of Veterans from Keynote Speaker Ken Putney Chief Petty Officer who served in the Navy (the dad of one Middle School students) to Al Jensen, who is a WW2 Veteran and was a Top Turret Gunner and Engineer in the Air Force and flew a B24 Bomber plane (Grandfather to a 1st Grade Student).
The hour included Kindergarten - 4th grade students signing while singing God Bless America, Middle School Choir singing America the Beautiful, and students introducing Veterans. We want to thank everyone who attended.
Thank you, Veterans, for your service.
Thank you, Ken Putney, for sharing valuable history and lessons.
Six lessons learned by a Veteran - Ken Putney
1. "Make Your Bed. One of my role models, Admiral William McRaven says that if you want to succeed in life you should "Make Your Bed." "If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another..."
2. "Be a part of the team. There's a reason I'm showing the deck crew and not the Top Gun pilots. The pilots do work hard, but if they didn't have a team behind them, they'd never get off the deck."
3. "Take care of your people. Take care of your people. We built teams, and then we took care of them. You do it too in school I'm sure - your friends are your people - they're your team. Notice them - talk to them - take care of them. They might not always be there."
4. "It's ok to be scared. Courage is being scared and moving forward anyway. Whether it's fighting for a buddy on a battlefield or standing up to a bully in middle school, working through fear with courage is life-changing, and the more you practice it, the easier it gets."
5. "Strength comes through adversity. Do hard things. It'll make you stronger. If the thing you're doing seems too hard, don't quit - ask for help. If you need to, go back and see the previous four lessons to find your team and get that help."
6."Be ready. During my last deployment on the way to Afghanistan, our aircraft carrier launched a helicopter, and while they hovered we brought hundreds of the crew out onto the flight deck in their dress white uniforms to spell out the message 'Ready Now'. In truth we weren't perfectly ready for the mission our country was sending us on - no one ever is. But if you wait until everything is perfect, you'll never be ready. So the lesson is to prep as much as you can in the time you have, then just do it. To be honest, I could have used a few more days to prepare for this talk I'm giving you, but last night I had to decide that it was Ready Now."

FROM THE CHAPEL
Soldiers were deeply moved by the Thank You Cards from Franklin Academy -- they utilized them for a series of Veteran's Day events. Our sincerest gratitude from the 626 Brigade Support Battalion ("Assurgam"), 3rd Brigade Combat Team ("Rakkasan"), 101st Airborne Division ("Air Assault"). Thank you for supporting our Soldiers and our nation's Veterans.
Please see attached photos from three events with the Thank You Cards from our students.
SPANISH WITH MRS. MCDONNELL
2nd Grade Spanish class - Over the last couple of weeks, second graders have enjoyed learning, writing, and speaking Halloween vocabulary in Spanish. They took this learning a step further and practiced alphabetical order (Orden Alfabético) with these same words. Students discovered that alphabetical order is figured out the same way in both languages! Great efforts 2nd graders!
3rd grade Spanish class - Students wrote Halloween sentences using the vocabulary words and sentence starters they learned over the last two weeks. Students also practiced some of the Spanish grammar rules that apply when changing nouns from singular to plural. Students wrote some creative sentences using the starters "Yo veo" (I can), "Me gusta" (I like), and "Me encanta" (I love). Great effort 3rd graders!

THE READING CORNER WITH MRS. SAMUEL
Happy November! I love all the leaves that fall around the school this time of year. It
makes my walk between the two buildings so enjoyable (the rain and wind, less so).
As the year gets somehow even busier with the holidays approaching, I thought I could
talk about organizing strategies to keep track of library books (and other things!).
A great way to keep track of library books is to keep them in a special, designated place.
I keep my own two kids’ public library books in a different spot than their school library
books. You can use a special bag, a bin, or even a particular table, and that special spot
can be in their room or even by the door.
As for remembering what DAY their books are due (when they have library class at
school if they are K-4), there are a few things you can try. We happen to have a small
chalkboard by our coat closet, and I put up a note stating what days my kids have library
(and PE so they wear the right shoes!). They are now used to checking the chalkboard
without me reminding them, and I cannot express how happy that makes me! Parenting
win!
I have also done a sticky note on the door, and on the rare occasion that I am really on
top of things, I will even have them place their books in their backpack the night before.
You could try setting an alarm on your phone the night before to help remind them if
that works for your family.
And if you can’t seem to find the darn books anywhere, I highly recommend checking
the places books like to hide: Between their bed and the wall, under the bed, under the
couch, in the couch cushions, or under the car seats.
Helping your student develop responsibility and organizing strategies will serve them
their whole life, well beyond remembering to return their library books!
Happy Reading.
Mrs. Samuel
