2nd Grade Scoop

Mayfield Junior School - November 16, 2015

Mayfield Honors Veterans

In Mayfield Families, students proudly submitted their stars exhibiting a Veteran's name, to add to our Veteran's Wall in the gym hallway. We began our day gathered together on Wednesday, Veteran's Day, with a moving color guard presentation of the flags to honor our veterans. We also had a guest speaker, a helicopter pilot who served in the Vietnam War.

Mindfulness Lessons with Mrs. Reedy

Mrs. Reedy visits second grade classrooms monthly for Mindfulness lessons. The children learn to use their senses to stop, and be mindful of the taste and feel of an apple. They observe, listen, and touch things in nature around our campus, and journal about it. Their mindfulness makes them aware and appreciative of the moments, the beauty, and all that's around them.

Reading is Your Golden Ticket!

Last week, second grade attended two Author Visits. One visit was with author and illustrator Tad Hills, and another with author Jennifer Holm. Below you will see pictures of the visit with Jennifer Holm, author of the award-winning Babymouse series, and more. We also ended last week with Friday night's Family Night which was a lot of fun for everyone. This week, Tuesday and Wednesday, we have Donuts with Dads. If Dad's can't attend, special friends are always welcome! See the latest Book Fair News here: https://www.smore.com/dkt5j

Donuts with Dads and Special Friends

Dad's and special friends, join us for a special morning of snacks and the Book Fair in the HPAC. Tuesday and Wednesday are divided by last names, with A-L on Tuesday, and M-Z on Wednesday. (If you can't make your day, please come on the other day!) You will find your child's Book Fair wish list on-file at the Book Fair. Validated parking will be available in the Sheraton/Convention Center parking lot between Cordova and Green on November 17 and 18 for Donuts with Dads, 7-8 am. Lot entrances are on Marengo, Euclid and Cordova. Parking is available on a first come, first served basis. Bring the parking slip you receive to MJS, and we'll provide a validation ticket in the HPAC at the Euclid Avenue entrance. Parking is free with validation only; you will need both the parking slip and validation ticket to exit the parking lot.

Collecting for a project

Please continue to bring in empty toilet paper rolls for a fun second grade project. We are going to need two rolls per student, but if you have extras, please bring those in too! We will need these by Monday, November 23rd, but are collecting them each day! Thank you!

Christmas Concert

Hopefully you are helping your chid practice singing at home using the jukebox link: sites.mayfieldjs.org/kbowen We will practice this week at school, and it's important your child is ready! The Christmas Concert will be held in the Hayden Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, December 9th at 6:00p.m., and will be followed by the lighting of the Mayfield Christmas tree. The call time will be forthcoming, but expect to arrive at an earlier time. The children will wear concert dress with Christmas accessories like socks, sweaters, and hair bows. Please, no high hats, antlers or flashing lights. Santa hats are okay if they lie flat. We want to see all the children's happy faces! This will be a beautiful night of Christmas carols and holiday cheer. We can't wait to see you there!

Faith Matters

Family Prayer: Families who unite in prayer develop a strong commitment and love for one another. Here are some ways to incorporate prayer into family life.

  • Pray before and after meals; use a formal prayer or make up one of your own
  • Pray together at bedtime
  • Pray for victims of tragic events, such as the people in Paris
  • Pray for people in your lives who are sick or having a hard time
  • Pray a short prayer of thanksgiving when something wonderful happens

News From Technology Class

We are learning a new keyboarding program in technology class called TypingClub. The program is fully web-based, so students can use it to practice keyboarding in class, at home, or anywhere an internet connection can be found. We highly encourage practice at home! Even 15-20 minutes a day can make a big difference. The most important thing for your child to focus on while practicing is to avoid looking at the keyboard while typing and proper posture.

To log in to your child's TypingClub account, go to the following login URL: https://mayfieldjs.typingclub.com

Username: whole first name and first letter of last name (ex. leahw) Password: mayfield
