Week 3 - Term 3 (Thursday 6 August)
St Jerome’s Primary School acknowledges and pays respect to the Traditional Owners and Elders, both past and present, of the lands on which this school is located.
Dear Parents and members of our school community
The Power of Choice
Each day brings a new opportunity to choose.
We can ....
Choose to love - rather than hate
Choose to smile - rather than frown.
Choose to build - rather than destroy.
Choose to persevere - rather than quit.
Choose to praise - rather than gossip.
Choose to heal - rather than wound.
Choose to give - rather than grasp.
Choose to act - rather than delay.
Choose to pray - rather than despair.
Choose to forgive - rather than curse.
Fr Norbert Weber
How are you all going in the crazy busy times each morning? You are doing a fabulous job in getting your kids organised and being here at school, especially with everything you have going on in your world. The joy on the children’s faces as they run into school is a credit to everyone here at St Jerome’s.
It has been a wonderful start to the term. The quote above is something I came across when I was searching for an image to describe the energy and enthusiasm I see each day from my staff and our students. I thought it was wonderful that the word “enthusiasm” has this original meaning.
This Greek word, ‘entheos’, is a game changer when you think about what we see each day in our children. When we see their love for life, their energy, their enthusiasm, we can rejoice in the thought that they have God within them.
We have a belief as Catholics, as Christians, that we are made in the image of God. St Joseph was a carpenter, and Jesus did work in his workshop as a little boy, before he headed out on the public speaker circuit, so maybe this “entheos” has something to it. What a beautiful image that is: Jesus sanding away at his woodwork. Mary & Joseph definitely knew about play based learning.
A reminder about good manners in the car park : again!
Someone driving a Silver Kruger on Wednesday morning must have been having a very difficult start to the day. The direction arrows are there to remind parents to follow the rules. When a grandmother gently reminded you not to go against the arrow, she did not deserve a torrent of verbal abuse. Let's show our children that courtesy is important.
OSHClub Before and After School Care
Are there families who would use our OSHCLUB if the start time was at 6.30am instead of 7am?
I appreciate there are many jobs available that begin at 7am and conclude at 3pm meaning they are perfect for parents of school aged children!
If you fall into this category and would use OSHCLUB if it began earlier, please email Grace Simich on grace.simich@cewa.edu.au

MJR Focus - Giver not a Taker!
Please talk to your family about our MJR focus for the next few weeks and see if it makes a difference in your home!
Our focus over the next few weeks will be on being a Giver not a Taker! Challenge your children to try to find 5 different ways to be a giver each day and then discuss these each evening over dinner.
There are many times in the day that we have the opportunity to help other people. This can be in small ways by giving someone a smile or speaking to people...it doesn't have to big something big!
Takers always moan and want to know what is in it for them. they want more and more and are never satisfied. Which one are you?
Do you say...
School Photos - A message from Kapture
To our valued customers
We are currently experiencing a delay in our usual turnaround time for the delivery of photographs. This has never been the case at Kapture and is due only to COVID-19 this year.
Our normal turnaround time is 3-4 weeks however we are currently operating at approximately 5-6 weeks (not including school holiday periods).
Unfortunately our forced closure and our reduced team upon eventual return has put us behind schedule, however we have new team members on board, all ‘old’ hands are back on deck – and we anticipate returning to our regular turnaround time by the end of Term 3.
We sincerely thank you for your understanding at this time.
Warm regards from us all at Kapture!

Great Book Swap Challenge
Can you imagine a life without books? Can you imagine not being able to read a newspaper, directions on a medication bottle, street sign or menu. Being able to read opens so many doors, but in very remote Indigenous communities, books are all too scarce and literacy levels are so much lower than anywhere else in Australia.
The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) is a not for profit charity focussed on improving literacy levels in very remote Aboriginal and Torres trait Islander communities.
St Jerome’s is supporting the ILF by hosting a GREAT BOOKSWAP CHALLENGE. We ask that our families have a clean out of their book collections and bring their pre-loved books to school where, on Wednesday 2 September, we will hold our book swap. Children will be able to purchase a pre-loved book for a gold coin donation. All the donations will go to the ILF to purchase books for the children of remote communities in order to boost literacy levels and enjoyment of reading. If you have books to bring in, please take them to your classroom by the end of Week 6 and bring gold coins on Wednesday 2 September to purchase books!
Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum
The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC) provides a framework for schools to teach children and young people from age 3 to Year 12 to recognise abuse, talk to trusted adults and understand ways to keep themselves safe. The KS:CPC forms a part of the Health Curriculum at St Jerome’s providing children with strategies that focus on understanding their right to be safe, developing respectful relationships, recognising and reporting abuse and knowing ways to protect themselves. Parents also play a part in improving communication and highlighting and broadening the networks available to children when they feel unsafe. Each week, we will provide some PARENT TIPS to support you in this journey.
Tip #1 – Always listen to your child. If you can’t speak right at that moment, tell your child when you will be able to give them your full attention. If your child needs to speak urgently, stop what you are doing and listen.
Tip #2 – Tell your child that he/she can tell you anything. Demonstrate this by putting it into practice and listen without over-reacting.
