By: Joel Murphy

Types of Meals

Family style: Food is placed in serving dishes on the table. People help themselves, passing serving dishes to each other.

Plate service: The food is already on each person's plate when it is brought to the table.

Setting the Table

Certain items called tableware, are needed to serve and eat food. The tableware you need for a meal depends on the food you serve and the way you serve it. Tableware includes: Plates, glasses, flatware, table linens, and other dishes.

Basic Table Manners

Table manners are really a matter of courtesy. They make everyone more comfortable so the meal is more enjoyable. Remember to use good table manners every day, not just on special occasions.

Clearing the Table

After everyone is finished eating, it's time to clear the table. Stand to the side of each person as you pick up dishes from the place setting.
