Senior Parents Night
MN Private College Week
Monday, 06/25/2018 to Friday, 06/29/2018 | 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CDT
Find out what Minnesota private colleges and universities have to offer!
Come on your own or with your parents. These introductory campus tours and informational meetings can serve as a first step to help students discover just what they're looking for in a college — especially if they are early in their search. Sessions are held twice daily, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Central Daylight Saving Time), on our 17 campuses across the state.
STEP 1: Check out each college’s profile or use the college finder to search by majors, sports and the arts.
STEP 2: Decide where you want to visit. View a map to see where our 17 campuses are located around the state.
STEP 3: Register for free online — and mark your calendars.
Register for free or add or change your visits.
Season 2 of "13 Reasons Why"
Season 2 of the popular Netflix series “13 Reasons Why” was recently released. In light of the new season and the popularity of the series by young people, we wanted to provide some resources that may be valuable to you and your student as the series depicts some very real and difficult topics. These topics include the following:
Bullying
Grief
School violence
Mental health concerns (stress, depression, anxiety, etc.)
Sexual assault
Unhealthy peer relationships
Teen suicide
As a result of these topics, we also want to caution parents that although the series is widely popular among students, it is not appropriate for many viewers, particularly young teens and/or those whom have struggled with mental illness, self-injury or thoughts of suicide. It is our recommendation that students refrain from watching the series due to the mature content, however if you choose to let your child watch the show, please consider watching alongside your child and having discussions around the episode content.
To begin the discussion with your student, below are some sample conversation starters you can present before or after watching each episode of “13 Reasons Why.”
What do you think about what happened in this episode?
Do you think the characters in the show are behaving in ways that are similar to people you know? How so? How are they different?
Did parts of the story make you think about how people who are struggling do not show the full picture of what they are dealing with to others?
What did you learn about “so-and-so character’s” situation from this episode? For example, what did you learn about what happened to Jessica and sexual assault?
How does what you have seen change how you view some things that happen in real life?
Do you think the adults did anything wrong? What could they have done better?
Additional conversation starters can be found in the “13 Reasons Why” discussion guide at: https://afsp.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/TipsForParents_2017.pdf
