2019-20 School Year: Morning Arrival Time for Students
Attendance Matters- On Time and Ready to Learn
When it comes to attendance, every day matters. According to the Oregon Department of Education, more than one in six students in chronically absent or late. Chronic absenteeism means a student misses 10% or more school days. That’s about two days per month.
Regular attendance will help children do well in elementary school, secondary school, college and at work. According to the Attendance Works Organization, by 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of school. By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
Attendance habits are set the very first week of the school year, so please start building good attendance habits early. As a parent, you can help by establishing a regular bedtime and morning routine. You can also avoid medical appointments during school hours, as well as extended trips when school is in session. It is also important that children arrive at school on time.
Back to School Night for Parents/Guardians
This year’s Back-To-School Night will be held on Tuesday, September 10th. It is an informational night for parents and guardians (no students). We will meet in the gym at 6pm for about 20 minutes to introduce the staff. You will also have a chance to hear what the Rock Creek Parent Teacher Club is planning to do this school year to support our kids and provide them with enrichment opportunities.
After this meeting in the gym, teachers will host two back-to-back, 25 minute sessions in their classrooms (3rd grade will be in the library). This will allow parents with more than one child at Rock Creek to attend multiple sessions.
6-6:20 pm - Parents meet in the gym
6:25-6:50 pm – Session I
6:55-7:20 pm – Session II
Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities
There are a couple of different ways to volunteer at the Clothes Closet. Volunteers are needed to help inspect and sort donated clothing before it goes over to the store. Volunteers are also needed to assist customers in finding the items they need and in the correct sizes.
The Clothes Closet serves kindergarten through high school. If you cleaned out your closet over summer break please consider bringing a donation with you to your shift. Many high school students wear adult sizes, so they do take larger men’s and women’s clothing and shoes.
The Clothes Closet is at the Beaverton School Administration Center on the back side in portables - 16550 SW Merlo Rd.Parking can sometimes be difficult so come early or carpool! Thank you in advance for helping with this important and rewarding volunteer work!
Speak Up 4 Student Success: HB 3427 - Student Success Act Community Conversations
The Oregon Legislature passed and the Governor signed the $2 billion Student Success Act (HB 3427) in Spring 2019. This is an historic and much needed investment in K-12 schools. The Beaverton School District could be able to access an estimated $34 million per year through a state application process.
School districts are required to apply for funds, and must engage their community in a needs assessment process prior to the application for funds. All Beaverton schools will be engaging their communities in these conversations during September and October. Rock Creek will be holding a Student Success Act Community Conversation on Wednesday, Sept 25th at 6:30 pm.
Please join us to talk about what student success looks like in our school and the Beaverton School District? What is going well in our schools? What areas/services/programs could we improve?
Your voice matters! We welcome your perspective and opinion.
Adult T-shirts for the Rocket Run
Each Rock Creek student and faculty member will receive a free Rocket Run t-shirt which is supported by our sponsors.
This year we are offering families the option to order adult Rocket Run t-shirts. If a Rock Creek parent or family member would like to have their very own Rocket Run t-shirt, please fill out the form below and return it by Wednesday, September 11th to the school office. The cost is $15 and all proceeds from t-shirt sales will go towards covering the cost of the student and faculty t-shirts.

A Message from the Principal
Dear Rock Creek Families:
It has been a pleasure welcoming your children to Rock Creek! I want to thank each of you for helping make this first week of school a positive experience for our students and our staff. It is always a joy to see the excitement the kids have as they meet their teachers and are reacquainted with friends. I have certainly been reminded about how to be a more joyful learner myself from watching them this week.
We want you to know that our Rock Creek priorities are:
• Assure a safe, welcoming environment for our students and families.
• Every child must feel loved by staff and have a love of learning.
• Develop strong relationships with everyone involved in the community.
• Assure that each of our children progress in their learning and increase in their creativity and love of learning.
We look forward to working closely together with you as we partner in the teaching of your children! Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and your children.
