The Arts

The Glen Edwards award winning band program provides a fun, challenging, and safe atmosphere for students to not only learn an instrument, but to also learn about group cooperation, personal integrity, and perseverance. Band helps students build a connection to a healthy activity that is greater than themselves, giving them a new sense of passion and excitement in life.

Advanced Art

Art students gain knowledge and identify the principles of design in a range of visual disciplines, gaining experience with required tools, materials and techniques for making art and design, while learning new concepts and skills. Advanced Arts students continue to push creativity and strive for independence in their works of art, which leads to a love of visual arts as part of a meaningful life and perhaps a professional career in the field of art.

AP Program

GEMS offers the College Board curriculum taught in math and language arts by AP/GATE certified teachers. This program offers students a higher level of critical thinking as well as an opportunity to grow academically and prepare for honors and AP courses in high school.

STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics . Rather than teach the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into course curriculum based on the real-world. At GEMS we are lucky to have several teachers who have participated in a three-year intensive STEM training at UC Davis. These teachers implement STEM strategies in their math, science and technology classrooms.

AVID is not just another program; at its heart, AVID is a philosophy. "Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support, and they will rise to the challenge." AVID is a college-readiness program for 6-12th graders taught by AVID certified instructors.

In Beginning and Advanced Broadcasting classes, students film and produce five morning news shows each week.
