WLWV Community Update
August 31, 2018
Welcome to the 2018-19 school year! Please take a moment to read a message from Superintendent Dr. Kathy Ludwig, as well as some notes and beginning-of-the-year highlights as we kick off the school year.
Greetings West Linn-Wilsonville School Community!
Our first week of school wraps up with clearing skies, sunshine, and thousands of happy faces filling our school spaces. Thank you for the many ways you have contributed to such a successful launch of the new school year. Our PTAs, Booster Clubs, and community organizations have put tremendous volunteer time and resource into making our school gardens, school entries, and school social events so welcoming and inclusive. We are so grateful. Members of both city communities also collected school supplies for students and families, ensuring that all children were ready to go on day one! This is a remarkable place to live in and to serve—thank you for such generosity of time, talent, and spirit.
Our district has a compelling mission, “How do we create learning communities for the greatest thinkers and most thoughtful people…for the world?” This mission question challenges and inspires us to commit our best efforts every day to our students — preparing them academically and socially with a global mindset so that they graduate high school confident, competent, compassionate, and prepared for the world ahead.
This year our teachers, staff, administrators and School Board are approaching our mission with a focus on “leading for all”. We commit to strategic and inclusive leadership moves, best instructional practices and equity of district resources to ensure each child, every child achieves success in our schools.
I look forward to this school year and to sharing examples with you over the course of the year as to how our school community exemplifies “leading for all.”
Welcome back to school!
Enjoy the weekend,
Kathy
What a Great First Week of School!
Exciting CREST News for the 2018-19 School Year
Starting with the 2018-19 school year, there will be some exciting changes coming to CREST -- the district's Center for Research in Environmental Sciences and Technologies. Please read this informational newsletter that highlights the learning opportunities students will enjoy starting this school year.
Of note, CREST will continue to provide inquiry-based science learning for students by bolstering science fair opportunities, increasing the scope of school gardens at all of our nine primary schools, and adding internship options for students at the secondary level. CREST will also increase education in farming and agriculture through school gardens and CREST Headquarters. The CREST Farm, meanwhile, will go fallow as it has been identified as a site for a future school. Access the above newsletter for additional pertinent information.

Register to Volunteer in WLWV Schools
Are you interested in volunteering in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District?
Last year, the district launched an updated process for volunteer registration and sign-in to improve safety and security for students. The HelpCounter system includes an approval process and helps staff monitor exactly who is working in WLWV schools.
Interested volunteers can register by visiting the district website. Simply click ‘Start’ to fill out your application, which includes a background check. The first time that volunteers sign-in to volunteer at any WLWV school they will be prompted to accept a Volunteer Agreement. Volunteers must also re-register every three years, or when volunteering at a new school.
Note that volunteer coaches register through a different process. Contact your school’s athletic director or principal for more information.
Volunteering in WLWV schools is an extremely rewarding experience. Your time is greatly appreciated by both staff and students!
Important Change to Medicaid Billing — We Need Your Help!
Starting in the 2018-19 school year the district will begin billing Medicaid directly for health services that are provided as part of an Individualized Education Plan. The change will provide additional funding that will allow for increased health resources and services, ensuring that ALL students have access to their education and needed health services. The change will maximize resources for Medicaid-eligible students.
To achieve and obtain this additional funding, parent consent is required. That’s why starting this year, additional paperwork and will be included in Special Education Paperwork. To ensure confidentiality of students and families, paperwork will be given to all students. A child and family’s insurance benefits will in NO WAY be impacted by providing consent.
For any questions about the change to Medicaid billing please contact the Student Services Department at 503-673-7618. This change includes a change to the Medicaid billing process.
