November 4th-7th Learning Journey!
Learning Lab Exploration
Our Story: All Around the Learning Labs
There are signs of fall all around us. Leaves are decorating our sensory tables, gourds are inspiring our art, squirrels have made appearances in the learning labs sparking our writing, Leaf Man continues to be a favorite story and we are excited to create illustrations and our own stories of where leaf man, or in some cases leaf girl, will travel. Like the story says "A Leaf Man has to go where the wind blows".
This is the mantra of inspiring our students this month. Gratitude means feeling thankful and appreciative for what we already have. By multiplying what we are grateful for, we can multiply our happiness and well-being. In some ways, it's just common sense. Focus on the positive things in life and we end up feeling better. Gratitude isn't just being thankful for the big things in life, though. It's about learning to notice all the little things that happen that you can be happy about too! As the teaching team instills these thoughts into students we are engaged in writing workshops writing about and sketching what we are grateful for! As a part of the kindness curriculum, we have also started notes of encouragement to give to friends or even to ourselves such as I love you because you are awesome because you are the best because. Through this project, we are encouraging students that it is important to be kind to others and ourselves. SCHOOL FAMILY!
Pumpkin Scientists have been busy in the pumpkin lab! As we develop emergent science skills students are being introduced to the scientific method, making predictions, observations and drawing a conclusion about what occurred. Scientists learned that a reaction can be caused when two or more ingredients mix.
Leaf Chromatography
We know that leaves absorb light but did you know that they also absorb color? This week in STEM we were exposed to all of the colors hidden in our leaves with the use of rubbing alcohol, a penny, and some tinfoil. These simple household items will help release the pigment stored by the leaf and expose the colors to us.
The art studio has been reinspired with the artists Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dali. When teaching art appreciation it is important to find notable facts about the artists that students can relate to. This month Mr. Dali and Frida offer us many. Students are intrigued of course with Salvador Dali's mustache but also his uniqueness. Dali was a collector and one of the collections he has is ceramic cats (of course Zoey was over the moon with this fact). He also painted his dreams which allow students to use their already active imaginations when creating. While the art studio will focus on Dali inspired self-portraits (Our students will gain mustaches!!!!) playscape art will offer a surrealist approach to masterpieces! "ARE YOU SERIOUS???" Frida is always a student favorite as they are drawn to her bright colors, and use of flowers. Frida dress up will offer a creative and kinesthetic connection to the artist! Then we will head to the art studio to create Frida inspired self-portraits with vibrant paint colors and beautiful photographs of the cutest artists we know! In learning about each artist's biographies students will discover the uniqueness of each but also the hardships that each faced but persevered through! These artists are important for students to gain an understanding of their work and life. Next week we look forward to 2 new projects inspired by these artists! One includes sweet Valentino!

The History of Kindergarten
The original play-based, design education concept of Froebel Kindergarten was radically altered 100 years ago by John Dewey, G. Stanley Hall, and other educational leaders. Today, the remnants of Froebel's work can be seen in the offshoots it inspired: Montessori, Waldorf and Reggio Emilia. #ReggioEmiliaApproach #playbasedadvocates #letkidsbekids#classroomwithoutwalls #progressiveinnovativeschools #artsyschool#forestschool #Natureplaybasedschool
