Braemar Mission Statement
Since the last Braemar Bulletin, we have had a few busy weeks! It was absolutely wonderful to see classrooms and hallways filled with families and students on Wednesday, September 21. This event has been long over due since the last time we welcomed families in for an Open House was September 2019. Teachers had the opportunity to meet with families and welcome them to a new school year. Thank you for joining us and making it a fun evening! If you were unable to attend, please check in with your child's teacher for any important information about classroom routines and upcoming events.
On Sept. 23, students from kindergarten to grade 7 participated in the Terry Fox Run. Our 'Toonies for Terry' donation drive was a great success! A cheque for $1040.30 will be sent to the Terry Fox Foundation on behalf of the Braemar school community. Thank you everyone, especially our parent volunteers who spent the afternoon ensuring student safety throughout the route.
Last week, students participated in classroom activities to mark Orange Shirt Day and Truth and Reconciliation Week from Sept. 26-Sept. 29. We began Orange Shirt Day last Thursday with all classes coming together in the cul de sac to sing the Coast Salish Anthem.
Our grade 4-7 students have begun their Cross Country season. Special thanks to Braemar teachers: Ms. Turnbull and Mme Zwart and to Parent, Mark Fenn for coaching students. Additionally, students in grade 7 will start basketball this week. We are grateful to Mme Catalano, and Ms. Ham for supporting the teams. If you have some time to coach basketball in the coming weeks, please contact Ms. Ham at cham@sd44.ca
In closing, we wish you and your loved ones a very Happy Thanksgiving on Monday. There is certainly much to be grateful for.
Until the next bulletin!

Message from Braemar Library
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
The Scholastic Book Fair was a huge success this year. It was so nice to be able to have it in the activity room and to see students making book selections for their home collections or wish lists for our school library. I would like to thank all my student and parent volunteers. You were vital in helping the Book Fair run smoothly. I would also like to give a big shout out to the Braemar community who supported this fundraiser. I enjoyed seeing the faces of many parents and having some good conversations about books! I was able to take $638 dollars in product from the Fair. We also earned more Scholastic credits and cash rewards that will be put towards future purchases for the library. I look forward to getting new books on the shelves next week.
Please note that reorder books will be delivered to students on Thursday.
Regards,
Mrs. Ross

Medical Alerts and Allergies
If your child has any medical conditions that may need to be addressed at school (allergies, etc.), please contact the office as soon as possible. We will then send home the required paperwork. Please ensure required medication, such as an EpiPen, is brought directly to the office.
We are a peanut and nut aware school. Please be mindful of the policy in your child’s classroom as we have several students and staff with life threatening allergies to peanuts/nuts.
Students Leaving During the Day
It is kindly requested that parents/guardians notify their child's teacher of an appointment prior to picking up their child through email. Providing advance notice to your child's teacher(s) avoids disruption to classroom instruction from office staff. Your cooperation and support is greatly appreciated in this matter. Please remember to have your child sign out prior to leaving school grounds. Thank you!

Talent Show News:
Attention all Grade 4 - 7 Parents!
Does your child have a special talent? If so, please consider having them audition for our up-coming Talent Show! Here are some ideas: sing a song, perform a dance, tell a joke, perform a stunt, juggle, do a magic trick, play a musical instrument, perform a short skit, mime, recite or read a poem that your child has written, perform a sports routine (skipping, gymnastics, basketball dribbling skills)….think of all the talents your child has and help them pick one to share on stage!
Braemar’s Gr. 4 - 7 Talent Show will be on Thursday November 24th this year. An information meeting was held on September 22nd, and notices went home with students regarding this exciting event. If your child would like to participate in the Talent Show, and is in Gr. 4 - 7, please have them fill out a form, found in the office, and sign-up their act on the sheet on the music room door. A reminder that forms are due by Tuesday October 4th, 3 pm.
Auditions will be held at lunch time on Tuesday October 11th, Wednesday October 12, Thursday October 13th, Tuesday October 18th, and Wednesday October 19th. An audition schedule will be posted on the music room door by Friday October 7th.
Please help your child prepare for their audition. Students need to practice many times before their audition day. The names of the student performers, who get accepted for the show, will be posted by Wednesday October 26th.
The Dress Rehearsal for the show will be after school, in the gym, on Wednesday November 23rd, starting at 3:05 pm. We hope to be finished the rehearsal by 5:30 pm. Once students have had their rehearsal, they may leave. We will rehearse in order so the M/C’s and tech team can practice their roles. All talent show participants, M/C’s, and tech team need to be at the Dress Rehearsal.
There will be an Afternoon Show, on Thursday November 24th, at 1:15 pm. This show is for all students and teachers, and any parents of performers who cannot attend the evening performance. The Evening show will start at 7:00 pm on Thursday November 24th. Seating for parents of participants starts at 6:30 pm; Seating open to others at 6:45 pm. Students watching the show in the evening must be accompanied by an adult.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Elizabeth McFarlane at emcfarlane@sd44.ca .
Thank you,
The Talent Show Committee

More information will provided in the October 17th Braemar Bulletin.
Second Step at School and Home
This month, Braemar is focusing on making our school a welcoming place where every student feels like he or she belongs. In our morning announcements we’ll be reminding students to welcome others and act and speak in safe, respectful, and responsible ways. In addition, we’ll be reminding students of our school rules.
- Care and respect for myself
- Care and respect for others
- Care and respect for learning
- Care and respect for our environment
In every classroom, we’ll begin teaching about what it means to be welcoming and be safe.
How to Support at Home:
We encourage you to continue this learning at home and support your child by learning, practicing and praising your child when they are being welcoming and safe to others.
- Welcoming - Reinforce the importance of smiling and greeting others with friendly words. Support your child to understand why a neat and clean appearance is part of being welcoming. Being welcoming also means including others in play and accepting that others are different from them.
- Being Safe - Reinforce the idea that safe actions keep everyone’s bodies from being hurt. When we act in safe ways, we keep our hands to ourselves and don’t use them to touch others in hurtful ways. When we use safe words, we make sure nobody’s feelings are hurt. Safe words are kind and respectful.
NVSD INFORMATION: Foundation Skills Assessment Testing
Foundational Skills Assessment (FSAs)
The Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) is an annual province-wide assessment that provides a snapshot of students’ foundational skills in literacy (understanding and communicating with language) and numeracy (understanding and working with numbers). All students in Grades 4 and 7 are required by the Ministry of Education and Child Care to write the FSA.
The results of the FSA are communicated at the provincial and school district levels, as well as confidentially at the individual student level to parents/guardians. The results are a tool that can be used along with the many other assessment approaches teachers use in the classroom to support student learning; however, they are not part of formal student evaluations and are not included in student report cards.
The FSA will be administered at North Vancouver School District schools between October 3 and October 28, 2022. The assessment includes online and written questions, a group activity and a reflection exercise. The written responses will be marked within the school district by our teachers and administrators.
Please see Braemar's main website page for schedule for your child's class.
