Whitford Catholic Primary School
Newsletter 11 - 1 May 2019
Message from the Principal
This week I’d like to welcome everyone to school and say that it is also great to be back again after my time away. We welcome all new students and are proud to have the opportunity to share our beautiful school, and all the exciting events that we have to offer, with their families this term.
In saying this, I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity of walking the Camino in Spain. Always being attracted to the cultural and religious traditions of Spain, especially the historical aspects of the Camino, the opportunity of trekking along the same path and in the footsteps that pilgrims over the centuries had walked, was very appealing and something I had dreamt of doing for a long time.
The many moments of silence as well as the opportunity for companionship and connection with others along the journey came at the right time and it was certainly a privilege to be part of such a committed and enthused group of walkers from across Catholic Education WA.
Being present in different Spanish landscapes, experiencing changing weather conditions from snow to sunshine and everything in between, walking through simple villages, praying in local churches and being immersed in the beautiful sounds of nature around us, was certainly something to be cherished.
The opportunity to disconnect from the busyness of life also opened an amazing space for self-reflection, time to just ‘be’ and was certainly great for the soul on many levels! The physical and emotional challenges of walking 300kms reinforced the importance of having a goal to work toward, however a light bulb moment for me was when I experienced the real joy of the journey and realised the power of small steps in reaching our destination.
An important life skill for each of us to remember when things get tough – one step at a time.
The great thing about pilgrimage is that everyone is walking their own journey, so if you are keen to learn a bit more about yourself, then I would highly recommend it for you! Feel free to catch me for a chat if you would like to learn more.
I would like to thank everyone for welcoming Ms Lina Bertolini to our school in my absence and to Lina for taking the time out of her own school to support us toward the end of last term.
Best wishes to all our students and staff for a wonderful term ahead as they continue to demonstrate their talents and love of learning across the curriculum.
Many blessings

Assistant Principal Messages
Stations Of The Cross
The Year Six students are to be congratulated on leading us so reverently on the Stations of the Cross at the end of Term 1. The preparation and time that went into this at such a busy period of the term was much appreciated and was a lovely lead in to Easter. Special thanks must also go to Mrs. D’Adamo, Mr. Ostaszewskyj and the Year 6 teachers Mr. Barns, Mrs. Ryan and Mrs. Hales in helping prepare the students.
Motor Neurone Day
This Friday, we are fundraising to find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease, an illness that claimed the life of a much-loved staff member of Whitford Catholic, Mrs. Denise Millard, in 2002. For a gold coin donation, children will receive a blue cornflower and may also dress in blue on the day. Proceeds will go to help fight this debilitating and fatal disease. A special guest speaker will be addressing the children about Motor Neurone Day at assembly this Friday. We look forward to contributing to this worthwhile cause and seeing a sea of blue this Friday. If anyone would like to purchase extra cornflowers they are available at the front office for a gold coin donation.
Student Ministry Badges
This Friday our students from Year 6 Blue will be receiving their ministry badges for Term 2. Thank you to the students from Year 6 Gold for the wonderful work they did as part of their ministry in Term 1.
AFL Academy – Mater Dei
At this Friday’s assembly, we will also be joined by Mr. Luke Hendricks (Director of Football and Head Coach at Mater Dei) and the Principal of Mater Dei, Mrs. Annette Morey. They will be talking about The AFL Academy at Mater Dei College (MDC) which aims to provide talented students with an opportunity to further develop their footballing ability. Mater Dei is very proud of their football academy which holds a strong reputation within the Footballing Community and serves its students, as a Talent Pathway in progressing to elite football, with the potential to achieve WAFL/AFL selection. All parents are welcome to attend.
Project Compassion
Please return your Project Compassion boxes to your classrooms this week so they can be counted.
