A Great Start!
We are very excited about the start of the 2021-2022 school year! We met with each grade level on the first day of school to talk about expectations and some new things that will be happening this year.
Our focus this year at BRHS is on FAMILY. We want our school to be a place where students feel welcome, can learn and grow, and have a place to belong. We are going to have fun, we are going to hold students and ourselves accountable, we are going to motivate students to succeed, we are going to be innovative in our approach to school, we are going to grow leaders in all areas, and each and every adult is in this building because we care about our students, it's about "you."
One new initiative this year is our Class Competition. This program arises from an effort to encourage and support students and to have a positive school culture through clear expectations, healthy competition, and rewards. Students will be earning points for their grade level through:
- Academics - A or A/B honor roll
- Attendance - Perfect attendance each 9 weeks
- Positive behavior - Random acts of kindness, students of the month, no office referrals
- School Participation/Spirit - Participation in clubs, organizations, athletics, band, etc.
- Class Competition Days
We will total points for each grade level, every 9 weeks and the winning class will be rewarded. The new Class Competition was a joint effort between our Campus Leadership Team and the Student Advisory Council. We believe that it will help us to focus on the students who are doing great things and recognizing and reinforcing student success.
Our teachers are hard at work inside the classroom to help their students learn and grow. We have several new teachers and new course offerings this year that are going to greatly benefit our students. Be sure to check out our "Academic Spotlight" further down the page each month to learn more about what is happening in our classrooms.
Outside the classroom, fall is all about football, volleyball, marching band, cross country, and FFA Leadership Development Events. For more information about each of these programs, please see the links below.

Taking Curriculum and Educators Outside: Blue Ridge High School Teacher Attends AWLS
Outdoor adventure and classroom curriculum intersect at the American Wilderness Leadership School (AWLS). Led by Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF), AWLS teaches educators like Jennifer Stroup how to use the outdoors as a classroom and incorporate ecological lessons into all aspects of the curriculum.
During the ten-day workshop held just south of Jackson, Wyoming, Mrs. Stroup learned
about the science of conservation and the positive role hunting plays in it. Participants shot
firearms, studied stream ecology, got involved in class discussions, went on conservation hikes, and learned outdoor and survival skills. They networked with their fellow educators from throughout the country.
AWLS is presented by Safari Club International Foundation, which funds and manages
worldwide programs dedicated to wildlife conservation, outdoor education, and humanitarian services. Workshops are sponsored by SCI Foundation, SCI Sables, SCI Chapters, Hunter Legacy Fund, and corporate sponsors.
The week was packed with outdoor opportunities that can easily be incorporated into
current classroom curriculums. Everything in nature is interconnected; now for the educators,
so are the state standards and lessons about conservation in subjects like math, science,
physical education, language arts, social studies, and art.
Mrs. Stroup also became certified as an instructor in the National Archery in the Schools
Program (NASP). Mrs. Stroup can teach archery in a physical education class or as an after-
school activity or club. Archery can be used as a teaching tool within subjects like physics to
explain how an arrow flies or the worldwide history of the bow.
