Transition is the process through which a student receiving special education services progresses as they move from high school (age 14) to adult life, whether through graduation or the student has turned 22 years of age. This important part of the special education process can seem complex and overwhelming. This workshop seeks to inform parents and students about what they should expect as they move from school to post-school activities.

December Newsletter 2018
Parents of 6th Grade Students: Please continue to send in your child’s physical examinations and immunization records. All children must show proof of all required vaccinations prior to entering the 7th grade or may be excluded from school. Please follow this link for the state required vaccinations: Required Vaccinations 2018-2019
Wellness screenings: Our 7th grade vision and hearing screenings are complete. We will begin the state mandated postural screenings for all grades this month. These screenings will continue until complete. If your child is under the care of a physician for scoliosis, please contact the Health Office with an update. Notices will be sent home if follow up care is recommended. Please periodically check your child’s backpack for a letter from the Health Office.
Flu Season is upon us: Please keep in mind that the flu season is unpredictable. Even during mild seasons, influenza can cause illness and even death for thousands of people in the United States. Symptoms of flu can include fever, cough sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. Some people with flu will not have a fever. Influenza also causes a substantial amount of missed school among students and staff. If your child has the flu, they should stay home to rest and to avoid giving the flu to others. They should be kept home until at least 24 hours after their fever is gone without using fever reducing medications, like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil). The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is advising that the single best way to prevent influenza is vaccination of everyone six months and older. For more information, please utilize the following online resources: CDC: Influenza or Massachusetts Flu Guidelines
If your child has been diagnosed with any communicable disease (such as flu, strep throat, conjunctivitis, whooping cough, chicken pox etc.) please notify the health office. It is important for us to know what illnesses are present within the school community so that we may take measures to protect the other students from illness.
REMINDERS:
Self-Dismissal from school - Please note that children should not be using their phones to text parents during the school day. If your child is not feeling well, he/she should visit the nurse for assessment. Please accept this reminder that if your child texts you during the school day requesting to be dismissed due to illness, kindly advise him/her to go to the nurse’s office. We will happily call you and discuss how your child is feeling, and arrange dismissal if necessary.
Please send your child to school with a refillable water bottle daily: Refillable water bottles are strongly encouraged to keep the children hydrated through out the day. In addition to keeping the children properly hydrated, water helps to soothe sore throats and quiets coughs.
Illnesses: As per school policy, if your child has been sick, (vomiting, fever over 100, communicable illness such as strep) students need to be fever free without the use of acetaminophen or ibuprofen, no vomiting, and no diarrhea for 24 hours. For illnesses requiring antibiotics such as strep throat, students need to be on antibiotic therapy AND fever free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. For illnesses such as conjunctivitis (pink eye), once students have been on antibiotic therapy if appropriate, children may return to school. For common viruses/coughs and colds it is not usually appropriate to keep children out of school for the duration of symptoms, however the student’s cough should be manageable and the child should be eating and drinking adequately. Frequent hand washing at home and in school is a must to limit illness transmission!
Medication Policy: All medications must be kept in the nurse’s office and overseen by the RN to keep all students safe. Students are not permitted to keep medications in their backpacks or lockers with the exception of Epi-pens or inhalers if deemed appropriate by his or her MD. Any medications to be administered by the school nurse must be accompanied by a signed physician’s order and written parental consent. This includes prescription and all non-prescription medications.
Please contact the Health Office at 978-649-3115 (option 4) with any questions or concerns.
