Stellar Second Graders
December 13, 2019
Math Workshop:
We just finished our geometry unit on shapes and their attributes. We are now working on unit 5: Partitioning. Standards in this unit include partitioning a rectangle into rows and columns of the same size squares, counting to find the total squares within the partitioned rectangle, partitioning circles and rectangles into two, three or four equal shares, and describing the shares using words such as halves, thirds, and fourths. Students will also be able to recognize that equal shares of identical wholes need not have the same shape.
Reading Workshop:
In reading workshop we have continued to explore nonfiction books and their features. Some text features we have learned about are headings, diagrams, captions, photos, bold words, table of contents and glossaries. Students are now comparing and contrasting two nonfiction books on the same topic. They have really enjoyed learning about new topics!
Writing Workshop:
Our writers have been hard at work writing their final lab reports. After all of the amazing mini experiments we did, students got to choose notes on one experiment to turn into a scientific report. Students added details and scientific words to each section. They then revised and edited their piece and wrote a final copy.
Cold Weather Gear:
Please make sure your student has all of their cold weather gear with them each day. We had some really cold kids this week with the crazy cold weather. Also, please label all of their winter clothing. We have a lot of black snow pants that easily get mixed up. Thank you so much for your support from home!
iPads:
Please make sure your child charges their iPad each night to 100%. In second grade we use the iPad many times throughout the day. We have had many students bringing them to school with little charge or forgetting their iPad at home. We appreciate your support from home!
December 20th:
We have an exciting day planned for Friday, December 20th. In the morning our second graders will take a trip to the north pole while watching the Polar Express. Then in the afternoon our classroom parties will run from 1:45-2:45. Parties will be followed up with our school "Sing Along" starting at 3:00. If you plan on coming to these events please allow some time and patience for check in at the office. Please have your driver's license ready. Thank you!
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
