Science Fair January 21st- Grades 10-12 - Updates
Our 10th - 12th Grade Science Fair is coming up January 21! Below you will find important information for parents/guardians as well as a Science Fair FAQ and information for students attached below.
Dear AFSA Families,
Students in grades 10-12 will be participating in our Annual Science Fair event this year on January 21, but like most events, this has moved Virtual!
Staff are working to set up a coordinated event with the same general experience of the typical fair. We are recruiting outside judges to evaluate student projects, and students all got a head start on their projects during the first 6 weeks of school this year!
We have a few requests of parents for this event:
You will receive confirmation information along with your student. Please help ensure that they are ready, dressed appropriately, and prepared to present to their judges at their appointed time.
Parents are asked to remain off-screen and to prevent distractions during the judging presentation time. Students will have about 15 minutes with their judge panel.
Please provide a quiet space with limited background noise, keep siblings, guests, and pets out of the space as much as possible, and allow your student to shine :) Students are encouraged to practice their presentation for friends, family, or pets before their judging time!
What students need for the event:
Dress appropriately for professional setting (be mindful of what can be seen on video)
Their slideshow presentation should be open and queued up on their computer, ready to share their screen to display it to judges.
A computer with working camera and microphone to present with.
Quiet, distraction-free space for up to 1 hour during their assigned timeframe.
Please note that exceptional projects will be able to advance to the State competition, and students who qualify will be notified in February of that opportunity!
We thank you for your continued support of our mission and program at AFSA!
Important Information for all High School Students
Learning Term
Our current learning term (T6) ends on January 27 with the next term (T7) beginning February 1. Watch for more information on T7 student schedules
PowerSchool
The best place to monitor student progress is PowerSchool. While parents can look at Google Classroom to see if assignments have been completed, this does not always provide the most accurate information. PowerSchool is the best place to check student class progress and for work that has been turned in.
Attendance
Students must complete the daily attendance form in their advisory Google Classroom. Please help students remember to complete this form every day. If your student is ill, please call the High School Attendance Line: 651-209-3919.
Office Hours
AFSA teachers hold office hours for two hours each day. The schedule for office hours can be found on the live lesson schedule on the AFSA webpage. Students are encouraged to use office hours by joining a Google Meet, or calling or texting a teacher on their Google Voice. These are great opportunities for students to build connections with teachers, other students, and the learning material. Office hours can be used for many different reasons including but not limited to:
- Questions on an assignment or course content
- Tips on managing an assignment (where to start, breaking an assignment into steps, etc.)
- Checking in while working on an assignment in a open Google Meet
- Saying hi and connecting with teachers - we really enjoy connecting with our students!
- A question about advisory or any AFSA requirements
- Connecting with other students on a class assignment or activity - like a study group
Please encourage your student to schedule time throughout the week to connect with teachers during office hours. Better yet, encourage students to build office hour time into their daily schedules!

Weekly Department Updates
This week in Essence of English we continued working on our compare/contrast essay as we have learned about outlining and attaching evidence to assertions. In eighth grade, students are preparing to read that master of suspense, Edgar Allan Poe. Fun Fact: The Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League are named after Poe's classic poem "The Raven." Poe lived in Baltimore and is said to have written often with his Siamese cat on his shoulder for inspiration.
