Community, Integrity, Respect & Pride
Dear Ennis Mustang Families & Community,
I hope this finds you all well. In an effort to improve communication and transparency of the operations of the Ennis School District, I will be sending a school board meeting summary after the regular meeting. Please know that this is only a summary and not official minutes. If you are ever interested in viewing previous agendas and meeting minutes, you can find all of that on the school website www.ennisschools.org.
Please contact me with questions, comments, or concerns.
Sincerely,
Casey Klasna - Superintendent
July 10th, 2023 School Board Meeting
Summary
Housing Initiative #2 Update - The one bedroom duplex is framed and should be dried in within the next week Bridger Built is pretty much on schedule and hoping to meet the September 15th deadline for completion. Drive by and check it out. Very thankful for our school board being proactive and supporting this initiative to provide teacher housing.
Staffing Needs - the district is still short of school bus drivers. The discussion at the board meeting was that we may need to rotate in canceling routes like we did last fall. This is not ideal, but without drivers, we cannot fill the routes. Pay is $25/hr and guaranteed 22.5 hours/week. Willing to split the route shifts as well if needed. There will also be further discussion on what a 3rd position will look like at the administrative office. Typically, there has been a 3rd position, but last year we did not finish the year with that position. We will be looking at how that could look in the near future and will be discussed at future board meetings. Custodial wise, we are in great shape and fully staffed. We are fully staffed with teachers, which is outstanding!
New Activity Bus Wrap - This item was tabled in June as the board needed additional information and comparisons of other companies that put wraps (logo/lettering/mascot). After a comparison was shared, the board approved that the manufacturer put the wrap on at the factory. The cost is $7,000 and this will come out of the FLEX fund. The new bus is scheduled to be delivered late fall.
Football Scoreboard Update - This project will be underway in the next few weeks. Lehrkinds (Coca-Cola) is donating the scoreboard and Continental Construction is donating the labor to install. This will be 8’ tall by 25’ wide and will be located in the SE corner of the field. Very excited about this and so thankful for the generosity of Continental and Lehrkinds.
Lunch and Breakfast Prices - After a lengthy discussion of the Trustees, it was determined to increase our prices for the upcoming school year. With groceries and supplies so high, it has really hit our school lunch fund and has forced us to utilize the General Fund more than ever. The General Fund is utilized to operate the school and giving that fund relief is important to ensure our staff and students have the supplies, materials, etc. to be successful in school. Lunch/Breakfast prices in Ennis have not been increased for several years. It was contemplated the last few years, but with the coming out of Covid, it was decided not to increase costs to give families relief. At this point in time, we feel it is necessary to increase our prices. The following is the breakdown of prices. Breakfast for students K-12 was increased from $1.50 to $1.75. Lunch for students in K-5 was increased from $1.95 to $2.25. Lunch for students in 6-12 was increased from $2.45 to $2.75. Adult breakfast was increased from $1.50 to $2.00. Adult lunch was increased from $3.20 to $3.50. Seconds for students were not changed and will stay at $1.00. A second milk has increased from $0.30 to $0.50. It is understood that this may not be ideal, but if you are interested in obtaining paperwork for free and reduced meals, we welcome you to inquire to learn more.
First Reading Board Policies - As a result of the Legislative session and all the new bills signed into law, it will require the Trustees to approve new policies and amend existing ones to ensure they conform with the law. These policies were presented to the board, which they approved 1st reading. These policies will be considered for final adoption at a special meeting later this month.
Facility Use Discussion - There was discussion on how we can develop a system to allow more community use of the facility. Several variables were discussed and how it could look. There will be more discussion on this at the August meeting with more specific details.
Master Agreement Ratification - the board ratified the master agreement language between the MVEA and the Trustees.
The board scheduled a special meeting, Monday, July 31st at 5:30pm in the HS lobby to approve policy and engage in a budget training.
The next regular school board meeting is Monday, August 14th at 5:30pm in the HS lobby.
