The Weekly FIRE
Flexibility, Integrity, Respect, Effort
issue 12: 01/11/2021
Hello Dragons-
Next Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It’s the day that we have designated as a national holiday to celebrate his life and work and the ongoing movement for racial and economic justice that continues to this day. As we look back at the events of last week, when a group promoting white supremacy and anti-democratic goals attacked our capitol, we are reminded how critical and urgent this movement and our collective commitment to it remain. One of the aims of that attack was to challenge the right of American voters to have those votes counted. During his life, Dr. King argued that one of the most important things we can do to fight racism and injustice is to make sure that everyone has the ability to exercise their right to vote. That is as true today as it was then. This week, I invite you to honor Dr. King by taking a few minutes to learn a little bit about the challenges to voting rights that exist today, the work being done to protect them and what you can do to protect your own rights and the rights of others.

Animal Guide of the Week:
-Laura Craford, RLA Social Worker
For those of you who do not know what the animal cards mean…
Each newsletter I will pull a card from my deck of animal guide cards, it is our message for the week—something we need to think about, understand or that we need to remember about ourselves or a situation. This is something that I have been doing with RLA students and staff for a while now, it’s my thing. 😊 If you ever want your own card, message me (Laura) through teams or @ (740) 240-2311 and I will send you a picture of one, just like when you would come to my office for one when we were in school!

Are you still working on your small change for the new year? Maybe just now planning for how to get it together this year? One way to help yourself out is to get enough sleep on a schedule!!
Have you started staying up later and later? Sleeping in later and later? Yep, me too but we need to get into good sleep routines. I love to sleep in but then realize the later I sleep in the later I stay up and then next thing you know you are sleeping the day away!
Most teens need about 8-10 hours of sleep. Lack of sleep can impact everything from your emotions, your driving ability, focusing in class, increase your chances of getting sick and gaining weight, and your energy levels when you finally wake up!
Tips to get to bed at a normal hour:
- Be active during the day! Get some exercise
- Avoid alcohol, drugs and too much caffeine
- Read a book! Yes, the one that you are supposed to read anyway for class.
- You gotta put the cell phone away! The light from your phone or tv tricks your brain into staying awake.
- Create a morning routine so that you don't just lay in bed all day. Get up and brush your teeth and wash your face!
I bet you never heard of Ernest Everett Just
-Sue Rosemarin, Science
Ernest Everett Just was an African American biologist and educator who pioneered many areas on the physiology of development, including fertilization, experimental parthenogenesis, hydration, cell division, dehydration in living cells and ultraviolet carcinogenic radiation effects on cells.
Welcome to this week's The Science Behind COVID-19! Last time I provided a video about how vaccines work and why they are so important for public health! The number of diseases we don't think about anymore is fascinating! However, if people stop getting vaccinated, diseases can (and are starting to) come back 😬. If you ever have questions or concerns about vaccines (or other science topics) you are always welcome to reach out to me and I will talk science with you 🙂! Just email me at gpena@RSD7.net.
Now for some really cool science! The new COVID vaccine that Pfizer and Maderna have created is some cutting edge science. I, for one, am excited about the possibilities this technology brings to public health in the future. That said, new can be scary and, unfortunately, we are not talking enough about what is going on and people have questions. What is an mRNA vaccine? Why was this vaccine made so "quickly" (it wasn't, but it feels like it was)? This week's video will hopefully answer some of these questions for you, but feel free to reach out if you have more!
