ACA Pediatrics Council
Learning & Growing in 2020!
Seminar Updates
The ACA Pediatrics Council is proud to present VIRTUAL education options in fall 2020! Given the unique challenges of learning and working during the Covid-era, we are upping accessibility and moving online. Plans are underway for in-person learning opportunities in 2021.
Kids are getting involved in sports from a young age, which can lead to unique and challenging conditions. Learn about the special considerations for these young athletes and how best to care for them. From extremity adjusting to rounding out your knowledge of the challenges facing younger rec athletes, you'll leave with practical knowledge and a better understanding of this unique population.

Research Committee
The ACA Council on Chiropractic Pediatrics has dedicated a Research Committee to promote evidenced-based care in practice. Our goal is to make evidence accessible to providers and facilitate more contributions to research by clinicians.
Are you interested in getting involved with research projects, writing an abstract or case study? Watch for news about a newly formed Pediatric Research Fund where tax-deductible donations can be made online, easily and safely.

đź‘‹Please welcome our new SACA Representative, Alyssa Galster
My name is Alyssa Galster, and I am the new Student ACA Liaison for the Pediatric Specialty Council!
I am a final year chiropractic student at Northwestern Health Sciences University (NWHSU) in Bloomington, MN. I am originally from Minot ND where I developed a love for chiropractic while working as an assistant to a local chiropractor. I attended Concordia College in Moorhead for half of my undergraduate degree with a focus on Neuroscience. I am currently finishing my undergraduate degree through NWHSU.
My primary focus in chiropractic is pediatric and prenatal care. I am currently completing my internship at a clinic with this focus, with Dr. Kelsey Lloyd at Traditionally Healthy Chiropractic in Northeast Minneapolis. I have attended many pediatric seminars, including Webster and Craniosacral Therapy. I plan on finishing my ICPA certification within the next year, and after graduation moving out of state to partner in a pediatric practice!

PPP Updated Forgiveness Form and Increased Flexibility
Updates to the PPP program rolled out on June 16, 2020. The updated loan forgiveness form and instructions include several measures to reduce compliance burdens and simplify the process for borrowers, including:
Options for borrowers to calculate payroll costs using an “alternative payroll covered period” that aligns with borrowers’ regular payroll cycles
• Flexibility to include eligible payroll and non-payroll expenses paid or incurred during the 24-week period after receiving their PPP loan
• Step-by-step instructions on how to perform the calculations required by the CARES Act to confirm eligibility for loan forgiveness
• Borrower-friendly implementation of statutory exemptions from loan forgiveness reduction based on rehiring by June 30
• Addition of a new exemption from the loan forgiveness reduction for borrowers who have made a good-faith, written offer to rehire workers that was declined
Visit the SBA for the latest loan details and forgiveness advice.

Effective Communication Tips: Exploring Elderspeak
Effective communication is a known factor in creating a strong therapeutic relationship.
Recent research performed at Logan University exploring Elderspeak in simulated preclinical chiropractic student encounters, was published by the Journal of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine.
Understanding elderspeak is important to prevent future ageist behaviors from affecting older adult patients and to improve their health outcomes (Cockrell, 2020). Communication is becoming increasingly important to the health care industry. Researchers estimate 10,000 Boomers reach the retirement age of 65 years daily (Heimlich, 2014).Elderspeak in provider–patient encounters threatens the chance of building a trusting relationship and leads to bias, stereotypes, and negative perceptions of older adult patients (Wlodarczyk et al., 2017).
