What is Diabetes?
A group of diseases that result in too much sugar in the blood, or high blood glucose.
What causes diabetes/how do children acquire diabetes?
When the body can no longer make insulin because the body's own immune system has attacked & destroyed the cells where insulin is made.
Diabetes occurred in children when inherited genetic characteristics are triggered by environmental factors such as diet or exercise.
Can diabetes be prevented?
There is no known preventive measure for type 1 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes can often be prevented by a person being a normal body weight, physical exercise, & following a healthful diet.
Symptoms & effects of diabetes
increased thirst, frequent urination, hunger, fatigue, & blurred vision.
damage to the large blood vessels of the heart, brain & legs, damage to the small blood vessels, causing problems in the eyes, kidneys, feet and nerves.
How can diabetes be detected?
The standard diagnosis of diabetes is made when two separate blood tests show that your fasting blood glucose level is greater than or equal to 126 mg/dL.
Treatment options
Aerobic and strength training, regular physical activity, & losing weight.
