SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE
From the Desk of Dr. Laurie Heinz
Dear Parents/Guardians,
It is hard to believe there is less than one month left of school. We continue to press on with new initiatives, teaching and learning remains in full swing, and we continue to present our Moving 15 Forward proposal both at our school as well as at community meetings.
Institute Day
Institute Days are an important way in which we allow our staff to learn together and yesterday, they did just that! Just like their students – our teachers are learners! They learned about new curricular resources and ways to make learning meaningful. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day so impactful.
Teacher Appreciation Week
Today wraps up Teacher Appreciation Week and I would like to thank our families, students, and community members who went out of their way to honor our staff. Thank you all for showing our teachers and staff the appreciation they deserve for all of their hard work with students.
Open House
When spring is in the air – you know Open House must be too. Thank you to those that made it a priority to attend Open House. Open House allows students to showcase their learning. A special thank you to the staff for going above and beyond to make their classrooms come alive for this much-anticipated event.
Retirement Recognition
At a reception before the May 11, 2022, Board of Education meeting, we will be honoring our retirees who together have 1,022.5 years of service in D15! We would like to thank all of our retirees for their dedicated service to our district. Their impact will live on in the lives of thousands of students. We wish them the very best as they begin their next chapter. It goes without saying that they will be deeply missed.
Upcoming Board Meetings
Our next Board meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 11 and the June Board meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 8. We hope you can either join us or tune in the livestream on our Youtube channel to stay informed on all of the important initiatives going on in the District.
To subscribe to our channel, all you have to do is hit the red “Subscribe” button at the top right corner of our channel.
Moving 15 Forward - BPAC & MPAC
We are so excited to share that we will be hosting two different Moving 15 Forward sessions for our bilingual parents.
We will host a Multilingual Parent session for families that speak languages other than Spanish on May 18. Families interested in participating in the Multilingual night are asked to register by 5/16 to ensure we have the necessary translators. Click here to register!
The May 24, 2022 session will be available to our families that speak Spanish as their first language.
Reminder - Don’t Forget to Register for the 2022-23 School Year!
In order to ensure we are appropriately staffed, we need all new AND existing families to register for the 2022-2023 school year.
Registration for existing families has three easy steps!
Sign in to Campus Parent;
Provide proof of residency as well as any required health, immunization, dental, and eye exams; and
Pay your student fees.
Stay Tuned
We hope you stay tuned over the summer as we continue to share updates on our summer construction and updates on our Moving 15 Forward proposal! We will continue to keep you in the loop as we stay busy this summer.
Your Partner in Education,
Dr. Laurie Heinz
Superintendent
COMMUNICATIONS
Are you a Proud Product of District 15?
If you are a product of District 15 - meaning you grew up in the area and went to District 15 schools - we want to hear from you! Please fill out this short form to share why you are a proud product of District 15! Check out an example below!
Katie Burns-Wojtalewicz, Library Innovation Teacher at Walter R. Sundling, shared why she is proud to be a product of District 15!
Katie shared, "Some of my favorite memories are related to my love of running. It started during my years at Thomas Jefferson through field day and PE class, and ultimately culminated in a great run in the yearly mile race. This led to my participation and success at Carl Sandburg where we won the Sandburg Relays and held the mile relay record for many years! It seems like yesterday!
I love that I can share stories and memories of teachers that had an impact on my life and ultimately inspired me to become a teacher."
TEACHING & LEARNING
Parent University
The latest Parent University focuses on mindsets toward math with resources for parents talking to their children about math. Check out the latest Parent University here.
MULTILINGUAL
Welcoming Newcomers!
D15 proudly and warmly welcomes newcomer multilingual students every year! Since January the multilingual program has received approximately 112 new students from a variety of countries including but not limited to Honduras, India, Japan, Mexico, and Ukraine. As we welcome these bright students to our school communities, we embrace and support their home language, their unique life story, and rich cultural heritage that strengthens our whole learning community.
