Veterans Day Assembly
The Blair Oaks R-11 School District will be having its annual Veterans Day celebration on Friday, November 9, 2018, at 9:00 a.m. in the high school gymnasium.
This year's guest speaker is Vietnam War Air Force pilot Colonel (ret) John Clark. On March 12, 1967, Captain Clark was forced to eject over North Vietnam during a combat mission and was immediately captured and taken Prisoner of War. After spending nearly six years in captivity, Captain Clark was released during Operation Homecoming on February 18, 1973.
See link below for more information in our Veterans Day letter. The letter contains the list of service personnel who will be included in our video presentation. If you know of anyone whose name needs to be added to the list, please e-mail high school secretary Roxie Carlton at rcarlton@blairoaks.org or call the high school office at (573) 635-8514.
Serving Now or in the Future?
Last year during our Veterans Day assembly, we were able to recognize parents of students and family members of our staff that are currently serving or will be serving within the year.
We would love to recognize him or her at our Veterans Day assembly. Please email high school principal Melinda Aholt @ Maholt@blairoaks.org if we can recognize your family.Quarterly Service Project: Change Bandit
Our second quarterly project is a partnership with University of Missouri Children's Hospital in a community service project called Change Bandit. The concept is simple: gather up loose change, and make a big difference in the lives of children who come to Children's Hospital every day. We encourage you to ask family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers to donate their loose change to the fundraising effort.
We will have a grade level competition. The class from each grade level that donates the most money will receive a popcorn party.
Dates: October 15 - November 16
PATRIOT'S TREE
This year the Patriot Tree is being named Leon’s Patriot Tree to honor a local fallen Marine hero, Leon Deraps. Blair Oaks is called upon to honor our veterans by donating items (see suggested items below) to the Blue Armory and/or making monetary donations (make the check payable to: Operation Bugle Boy, Inc.). Checks can be dropped off at downtown Legends Bank or you may mail your check to:
Operation Bugle Boy Inc- Patriot Tree
Legends Bank
c/o Rosie Verslues
130 East McCarty St.
Jefferson City, MO 65101
These donations will be placed under a patriotically decorated Christmas tree (The Patriot Tree) during a dinner called Operation Bugle Boy 2018, for veterans. The donations are going to be given to Mid-MO Family PX food pantry (located at Blue Armory), a volunteer organization available to serve all branches of military families in the Jefferson City area. This year donations will be to support local military families who need help by donating items from the suggested list below and/or making a monetary donation. Please plan to make a donation to support our troops and brighten their holiday season while they protect and defend us. This is the Blair Oaks Community's opportunity to show our appreciation for their sacrifice and duty to our nation.
